I have been fortunate to get a Boardwalk view for all of my trips except for the last one where we had a view of the pool, the waterway to MGM and the top of TOT. I was very disappointed, due to the trees, it was difficult to even see the pool. Also there was plenty of noise from the pool but not nearly as interesting as the goings on at the boardwalk.
It was a much shorter walk to the room but I'd much rather walk the extra "mile" to a Boardwalk view. My son and I love to watch the drunks come out of Jelly Rolls in the wee hours of the morning. Or watching the boats starting out for the day, watching the sun rise over Spaceship Earth, of course fireworks, the piano/bicycle...
Sorry, my list could go on forever.

in March, and were able at that time to get a std view 1br for 5 of the 6 nights, and waitlisted for the 6th one, booking a std view studio in case the waitlist didn't come thru. About 6 weeks later, the waitlist came thru and we got the 6th night in the std view 1br. So, it CAN be done on short notice, but I wouldn't expect it to happen all the time!
