There is nothing wrong with the Standard view at BWV... The defination of Standard view is not a Boardwalk View, and not a view of the Canal or Gardens...
Generally, Standard view rooms can see the entrance to the hotel and (depending on what floor you are on) the parking lot... There is a nice pond with fountains and trees that tends to block the view somewhat...
IMO, the Standard View rooms tend to be quieter because you don't have the noise from the BW or from the boats in the canal constantly.
The only slight disadvantage (and you would have this with some Preferred/Canal views as well) is that there may be a LONG walk to the room from the elevators. Again, I see this as an advantage, because there is generally less foot traffic past your room door, but after spending a whole day in the parks, the walk can seem a bit long.
I'm not sure if you know this, but as others have posted, Preferred View is not Boardwalk view. Preferred view is a view of the Canal, one of the pools, or garden areas. (If you want Boardwalk view, that needs to be specified at the time of reservation.)
To be honest, the only view I would be hesistant of at this time would be the "infamous" dumpster view at VWL.
The only view that I purposely try to get is an Oceanview at VB... (Gotta love those balconies.)
