Staking claim on beach chairs at Typhoon Lagoon?

If you don't need the chairs for 30 minutes or more why not let them be used by someone who does need them. They also may just need a 30 minute break from the water. If everyone considered others there would be plenty of chairs as people would keep moving and feel like they had to stay in 1 spot all day. I could be wrong but when we get in the water we move our stuff and have always been able to find a place to sit.

with all due repect, how would you meet up with the rest of your party? I really want to know the LOGISTICS of this.
please explain how it would work, in detail, for a family of 4, all going in dif. directions? (because if you think mom dad and 2 teens are all sticking together for the duration, you have another think coming). so you need a logistically correct touring plan for splitting up, as well as one for a fimaily of 6 with parents , 2 older kids who are running all around, and 2 little kids. myabe mom stakes out a spot by the kiddie area. oops. not fair. while she is in the kiddie ,slide area with the little ones, she is "taking up" chairs" while n ot using them. so she spends an hour wandering the park with the little ones, looking for the older ones, who are waiting inline for "crush and gusher",
ok, stake out spots there. no. you won't be continually "using" them, either. what's wrong with staking out 3 chairs for the family of 6?
what about hubby and I? please explain, in detail, our "plan" for the day. without chairs. we are not "joined at the hip". should he carry around his towel, cigs (so sorry!) book, sunglasses, ride the slides he wants to ride, and hopehe finds me somewhere? or should we throw our "stuff" in a pile somewhere on the ground on the walkway? and hope it doesn't get kicked around?
we are taking up chairs IN the sun, (lots of people want shade), near the DSA (families avoid this like the plague.)
please, give me a real plan for couples and/or families who do NOT spend the whole day together, constantly riding slide after slide. where should I put my book? we should "keep moving".. all day? should I put my book in a ziplock bag and take it down the slides?
If that were the case, why not just allow people the seats near a certain slide area, and after X amount of time... TIMES UP! move along! ROTATE!
I have never been with little kids, but when I do get to bring my grandkids, I think I would like to either have spots by the kiddie area, of spots near the edge of the zero entry wave pool. should those parents move along?
and carry their towels, diaper bags, books, bottles, etc. WITH them everytime they move?
your idea sounds great IF EVERY family was mom, dad, and 2-3 kids, ages 8-12. whole family sticks together the whole day, goes on the same slides at the same time, does everything together.
so please, explain the plan for everyone else.

I would have to agree with this. I guess I don't mind so much people who are actually using the chairs getting up for a few minutes and returning. But DD and I were at TL last Sept on a day that wasn't even crowded. DD swallowed some water while bodysurfing the big wave and had a brief but intense coughing fit. She said she was fine but I wanted her to sit down for a few minutes. Every single chair within sight had been "claimed' but maybe 1 in 10 had a person actually on it. I finally made her sit down on one with a towel on it even though it made her nervous because "it belonged to someone." In this case no one came up and confronted us, I'd have to say lucky for them given my state of mind at the time. The owners of the towel may not have minded at all but it's been known to happen.

You have members of your group who stay pretty immobile then by all means let them stay seated with an extra chair for whomever in the group comes by.You want a place to put your stuff, rent a locker. You want a "base station" for your big, highly mobile group that may sit on the chairs a total of 30 minutes the whole day rent one of the cabana things. If you want to leave your stuff at a chair and save the expense fine, but don't get an attitude like you own it. It's ridiculous for chairs to sit empty by the hundreds holding peoples stuff while others are looking for a place to sit.

I do blame Disney a bit for this pehneomenon however. I understand the deposit for the lockers so people return the keys. I even understand a little the charge as the lockers probably require frequent cleaning and some maintenance. I don't understand however why they can't have a few banks of simple cubby holes for stuffing shoes or towels in. This might in a small way ease some of the "chairs as stuff holders" mentality. If it's as I suspect purely a profit motivated thing then I think that's kind of petty considering the amount of money people spend simply to attend the parks.

Since I'm already on an extended rant let me add a final thought. I think the expensive cabana things are cool, even for the price, given what you get included. But why not have some covered areas for rent at a reasonable price that are just that, with no frills, which allow more than 6 people. At the Schlitterbahn parks in Texas they have these and it's great. No worries about staking out chairs and you can put as many people in them as will fit, they don't care. No free water, no attendant, no towels, no mug, under $100.

[end rant]

there is no way I am spending $200 or even $100 for a private area to sit in. Especiallyif it's shaded. I want sun!!!
If I were there when your DD was gasping for air, of course I would leap up and she could sit in my chair.
there is no way, at a water park, that people are going to get up for "just a few minutes".
maybe disney should put in benches for "temporary seating".
just because hubby and I are not in our loungers constantly, does not mean we do not use them for a LARGE portion of the day. look at it this way. the longer we stay in our chairs sunbathing and reading, the shorter the lines for the slides are!!!;) and if we want to vacate our chairs for a while to slide, use the lazy river, etc. that is what we paid for. people like us who spend most of our time in our chairs, but Do vacate them to smoke, eat, go to the bathroom, and use the lazy river, slides, etc, make it so much easier for those of you who spend the whole day going from slide to slide! we are in our 50's and we just can't keep up that pace anymore. we like to slide a bit, rest a bit. lazy river a bit, sunbathe and read a bit. we spent the same amount of money, made sure we get up early to get those chairs (no litttle feat for me .. a night person, a waitress and bartender), we WANT to sit near the DSA, and get there early enough to do so. (ps, those expensive reserved spots are not only shaded, they are not near the DSA.) (if you sat in our spots, you would probably complain about the whiffs of smoke from the nearby dsas. we sit there so we can get up, get an adult beverage at the bar. relax, get up for a smoke. relax, go for a few slides, realax, use the lazy river, etc. etc. that's why we make a point to get their early.l
in summation, if you or yours need our chair to put on your shoes, inhale water, are feeling light headed because of the heat, whatever reason, you can use them. these are rare occurences, but of course we will let you use them. otherwise, we will use the chairs we got there early enough to temporarily "claim" for the duration of our stay there.

I'm not sure I see where the argument is, except I might add that DD and I arrive at the parks early as well but don't feel it necessary to "claim" a chair. I think the point is if EVERYONE takes your attitude we end up with :

Every single chair within sight had been "claimed' but maybe 1 in 10 had a person actually on it.

And I still think:
It's ridiculous for chairs to sit empty by the hundreds holding peoples stuff while others are looking for a place to sit.

we both get there early. you choose to wander. we choose to find a spot in the sun near a DSA where we can relax for two thirds of our day and not drag our books, (which are really hard to read when they get soggy), sunblock ,sunglasses, cigs (which are really hard to smoke when they get soggy) etc, with us .
I guess we have to agree to disagree. you will do things your way, we will do them our way. but if you need
a seat , I will give mine up. have fun!:hippie:

so if hubby goes to the bathroom, or goes to have a smoke, or goes to get a drink, anyone can take his seat? you have to pay money to be in the water park, and sit and the lounger and NOT move all day?

Maybe you should read the context I wrote this and please bury the tomahawk
and smoke the pipe of peace. :lmao:

/
mea culpa! you did mention people guarding chairs at a resort for the whole afternoon.
but you did mention saving seats for people who aren't there, and often hubby and I save seats for each other, or leave our stuff to save seats for ourselves. we are not there. hence, the saving of the seats.
just as in staking out spots for illuminations, we will take turns to go the the bathroom, have a smoke, get a drink, etc. people often say to us, "well, no one is there now!. if you want to save a spot, you have to BE there."
my point was, to have an enjoyable afternoon (or morning)at the pool , we can't sit in our chair the whole time.
there were others (and I'm sorry I lumped you in with them) who insinuated you can only leave your chair for a "few minutes".
how you can relax and enjoy yourself when you have only a "few minutes" is beyond me. what if you actually wanted to enjoy the pool? float on your back for a half hour and enjoy the sensation? the view? and get back to your lounger, only to find someone telling you, "I ws watching, you were gone for a half hour. I am using your chair now. your stuff is "over there". or :using the pool is ok, but going for a smoke and the bathroom is not".
it actually happened. hubby and I had been at the bowling pin pool for a while, reading our books, enjoying our coffee/tea. we went together for a smoke. he went up to the room to get his sunglasses, I took our mugs to the food court for REFILLS (which is included in the price of the mug). yes, I admit, while I was there, I used the bathroom and grabbed a newspaper (no line). there was a line at the mug station. when I returned to our 2 chairs, hubby's book and towel were on my chair, his was pulled over by a family.(I did NOT "shop", or "run errands", just quickly used the bathroom, got a paper and waited to refill the mugs.)
the mom said they didn't think we were coming back. and argues with me that if we wanted the chair, we should be IN it. (they were not IN it either, by the way, their 3 kids were in the pool with the dad) I was NOT gone that long. (hubby should have been back, but, hey, the coffee "kicked" in and he was in the room anyway, so..., he knew I was going right back to the chairs.)
sheesh. esp. at the pools, we use our chairs almost the whole time. hubby goes in the pool, maybe once. I do more than him, but I think I'm allowed to use the pool?
I agree with you about "smoking a peace pipe". but apparently others thinks we have to give up our chair if we go to smoke.in the DSA. (or, if we use our "few minutes" to smoke, we gave up our alloted time to refill our mugs, or use the bathroom.)
oh, ps, I would've gotten the newspaper earlier, but the store wasn't open yet. we had filled our mugs with coffee/tea from our room (I bring my own tea bags) the first time. I was going for a "refill".
and I know I sound like a broken record, but as much as you all hate hearing this agian, I hate having to explain to strangers why I want another cup of tea in my refillable mug, why I need to use the bathroom, how long I take in the bathroom after my morning tea, and why I staked out chairs before the store was open so I had to wait to
buy my newspaper!
(by the way, after "retrieving" hubby's chair, the family never missed it. the kids didn't use the chairs they DID have)

and, again, the same goes for the water park. some of us pay to enjoy the ambience, use the slides and lazy river a bit, and spend a LOT of time lounging, sun bathing, reading. and we need a lounger to do so. we should have to "take turns" using the slides? the few times we do? ok, now I know I'm getting repetitive, so I'll stop. we WILL stake out chairs near the dsa. and use them for the duration of our stay at the water park (unless there is RARE instance of someone NEEDING the chair) if someone arrives early and chooses not to do so; their choice.

Well you smoke and I have to go adjust my "breast" in the toilet area. It always seems to "escape" while swimming :lmao:

It's a prothese before you think I'm exposing myself our behaving weird. :rotfl2: That's why we don't go to the water parks.

So I guess we both leave our chairs and I agree it's total ridiculous to conquer your chair back when you leave for just a few minutes. I can see myself already hiding in the bushes or behind chairs wearing war colors like an Indian and jump up when I see "my chair". :rotfl2:
But I think we agree that when a chair is not occupied for hours, the towels are dirty, half on the ground because of the wind and the paper is pale because it lies untouched on a table for a long time something is stinking wrong.

I do "help" remove old towels that people leave and don't bother putting in the used towel bin. (when I see them collect all their other stuff, and know they are leaving)
if a book is ON the cahir, that person has not "left".
I'm glad we agree. people leave their chairs for a myriad of reasons. we also leave a tshirt draped over the chair,so there is no question we are returning. It might not be a "few minutes" but it won't be long.

Here's how we do it: we pick an area, pick a few chairs, and PUT OUR STUFF UNDER THEM. ON THE GRASS, SAND, WHATEVER. I will admit that if it's not busy-like when we went to Typhoon Lagoon in Feb., and our family was the only one on one of the slides for 1/2 hour-then, we put stuff on the chairs.

But on busy days, WE PUT OUR STUFF UNDER A CHAIR. We split up. Plan to be back "at this chair" at a good time. When we return, if the chairs are unoccupied by any people, towels, etc., we sit and use them. If there is other people's stuff on the chair, we take another empty chair. If every chair in view has stuff on it, we take our stuff and go look for empty chairs, OR, perch our butts on the chair with the least stuff. We don't lie down on someone's towel, we try to sit without disturbing anything.

If every single chair is occupied by a person....well, I've never been in that situation. :scared1: But, I imagine that if we went to retrieve our stuff from under "our" chair and every chair had a body on it, we'd sit in the sand/grass to eat, dry off, whatever, and get the heck out!!

But, this always works for us. It worked in Feb. 2008, we consisted of me, husband, daughter who was 12 at the time, and a niece who was 9 then, and afraid of the wave pool.

It worked on our trip when it was me, husband, oldest daughter who was aged 17, middle daughter aged 15 and the youngest then was 4. Why should all of our stuff have more rights than a person??

Look what I found on allears about Typhoon Lagoon. Beginning Sunday, September 20, 2009, you can now rent a premium beach chair space at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. This new offering includes 2 lounge chairs, an umbrella, a cocktail table and 2 towels. These will be available only on a same-day, walk-up basis. Guests may stop at High and Dry Rentals to check availability. The price is $40 plus tax.

Totally doing it.

That's awesome! A total solution for those who like to have a permanent base camp but aren't there all that much!! Thanks for the info!

I have read through all the posts (mostly smidgy ;)), and I can see both points of view (this one is much less heated so far than the last thread I saw on this topic!). If you want to save a chair, go for it. But if there are a bunch of chairs saved with no one on them and someone is "borrowing" yours for a few, don't be a big ugly jerk about it and kindly say, "Do you mind moving to another chair? My party is back now and we'd all like to rest". Now, if you are the person borrowing the chair, don't act like a big ugly jerk and say "Well, you weren't here and I was so now it's MINE! I threw your stuff over there by the trash!"

Basically, don't act like a big ugly jerk whichever side of the fence you may be on, and everything will be all cool. You can have your base camp and the errant swimmer who just wants to rest for a few can sit down on the public chair. :hippie:

I think that I'd pay the $40.00... even more so if I was up for smoke breaks, food, slides, etc... and would like to have a home base.

It's only going to be the two of us when we go, but I'd like to leave my Kindle on my chair and not take it into the wave pool.

Seriously, if there is really such a chair shortage that there isn't a place to put your stuff down while you ride and have a spot to meet back up with your party, then Disney needs to buy more chairs. We are on a tight budget and can't afford to fork out an additional $40 for a place to sit!

We were at Typhoon Lagoon 2 years ago in the summer and had no problems finding chairs. We staked out a little sand chair for each of us, left our towels/street clothes/books/cooler and went exploring and would meet back up periodically for a rest. There were plenty of spots, maybe not right next to the wave poool or whatever, but no shortage. I have been to many waterparks in the past, most often Schlitterbahn in Texas, and it is completely normal and expected for people to have a place to leave their stuff and meet back up.

Is there really a chair shortage now?

Let me clarify...

I'd rather spend $40.00 out of my pocket to have a set of chairs for the day, in the same spot, with an umbrella, watched by a Disney cast member, where other people cannot sit on it or move my stuff. This is worth the money to me, because I am one of ::those:: people who have a pet peeve about people sitting on my chair or moving my things. So for me, paying to $40.00 is not only considerate to myself AND the other people in the parks who might want a chair for only a half hour, but it also saves me time, doesn't make me stressed, and saves me the money for a locker rental, which is where I would have ended up putting my stuff.:thumbsup2

$40.00 between two adults isn't unreasonable, so I'd be willing to pay for it.

Totally agree! Also since WDW is offering this service I think it shows that THEY don't feel people have any particular RIGHT to a chair just cuz they got to it first and dumped their stuff there. Again, as I've said, I don't really have an issue with people who do this that actually USE the chairs for the better part of their stay. Yes of course you have a right to go to the restroom or have a smoke or ride a slide or two. I just find it annoying to look around at a sea of loungers covered with stuff and devoid of people. As a PP pointed out if everyone would just flow from chair to chair as needed there would be PLENTY available. It's all the chairs holding STUFF that cause a shortage. Since there is apparently a large percentage of people who feel the need to do this despite this obvious issue I'm gonna pay the extra money just so I don't have to deal with them.

the problem with this is it seems like your family is there to dothe slides all day. we don't want to sit for a bit just to dry off and get the heck out. your logistical plan did not is not valid, as it did not include one vital element.we want to USE our loungers to sunbathe and read. for quite a while. and, no we won't be moving from chair to chair,(unless they have added 8 more DSAs!

:hippie:

great post!:thumbsup2

If you are going to be gone for more than a few mins (bathroom break, etc), take your stuff and don't leave it there. How is it fair for a chair to be held for an hour while someone does slides, when someone else just wants to sit? I don't go into MK and set my junk on the curb while I do rides for 45 mins, to hold my spot for a parade.
