Stack units or side by side? Was: I need a new washer and dryer, recommendations please!

Not sure anyone has yet commented on the stacking vs side-by-side since the title was recently revised. I would only recommend the stacking units if you have limited space in the laundry room. There is usually some amount of vibration during washing and having the extra weight of the dryer on top could lead to other issues. I assume in that configuration the dryer would be on top? If space isn't an issue, I would always recommend the side-by-side models.

Should I stack the washer and dryer? I'm thinking that if the units are stacked I can move the laundry from washer to dryer easier and then the dry laundry will be at eye level I have enough room in my basement to stack or to have them side by side.

Unless you really need the space, I would not recommend stacking the appliances. Even with the special brackets (or whatever it is) I would worry about vibrations or needing to unstack for repairs/just unplugging the machine. A cabin we rent has my same appliances but stacked and I have to use a step stool to make sure I have the dryer empty. I am only 5'2" and it's in a poorly lit mechanical closet.

As for smelling musty, the materials that come with the machine tell you how to avoid that -- but I think too many people don't read them.

Sounds like you were lucky having an HE last more than 7-10 years. Our repair guy said if you get 5-7 years from an HE washer, that’s about all you can expect anymore.

I never had any mold or mustiness with either HE but always left the lid up when not using it.

I agree many don’t bother reading user guides or manuals and don’t know you can’t leave a top load HE’s lid closed between uses.
