Stacie's Journey for Weight Loss and the 1/2 Marathon Jan 09!

Good Morning everyone! Thanks so much for checking in!!! Matt's dad's surgery went really well. The surgery was Friday and he goes home today! Seems a bit fast to me, but they had him up walking a bit on Saturday and he sat up for the day and walked around a bit with his walker yesterday so he can get around some...

So, we did C25K on Saturday. It was sooo windy!!! We muddled through though. So, I guess today we will the start of Week 5!!! This is how I feel about Week 5 right now! :scared1: Day1, I can probably handle, but Day 2 has you jogging at 8 min, walking 5, then jogging 8 again...Day 3, has you running for a full 20 min!!! I just don't know about this... I have a feeling I'll be doing Week 5 a few times! :headache: But, that's ok. I've never run in my LIFE so I know I am going to have to work up to it...

So... Question. I have some Nike Dry-fit pants. Would these be the same as running tights? What is special about running tights? Looks like I'll be working out in 40 degree weather here pretty regularly soon so, I'm trying to gear-up!

I guess that's about it for now. Hope everyone has a great start of the week!
Stacie

Hello Stacie :)

Glad Matt's dad's surgery went well!! Nice to see that he gets to go home so quickly :)

Good luck with the C25K this week!! I know the full 20 min run looks omnious but just think of how rewarding it will be when you accomplish it! Best of luck to you :goodvibes:

And...Amy please correct me if I'm wrong...but Dri-fit pants are not like running tights. The pants will help break the wind (LOL) but not necessarily keep you as warm as a good pair of running tights. (again, this is coming from someone who doesn't own tights, but does own some Nike running pants)

Hope you have a good day!

Thanks for the info on the pants! Normally in the winter time I'm snuggled up on the couch watching TV--NOT outside in freezing weather running down the road! So where do I get such a thing as running tights/pants??? We have Nike outlet here...Maybe I'll check them out.

So...it looks like I'm fix'in (for those of you not from the south, interpretation = preparing... lol!) dinner for Matt's parents tonight. Matt's mom struggle w/ cronic pain and is in bed most days, so his dad normally does dinner. Now since Steve (Matt's dad) has a new hip and will be a little less mobile we'll be helping out for a while. Tonight's menu, Stouffer's frozen lasagna! It'll be cooking while we're training!

After training... This will be my evening... :laundy: and more :laundy:

Hope you're evening is more enjoyable than mine!!!

Hello Stacie. I'm new to your journal and it sounds like you are doing great! 13lbs is a great accomplishment! And you now fit into new clothes which is super exciting! Congradulations and Good job! :goodvibes

:yay: Sooo exciting for you and those new clothes! You are working so hard and deserve to see results. GREAT job :).

As for the 20 minute run...I know it feels daunting but you will be SO amazed at what you are capable of! I totally believe in you and your ability to move forward in the C25K program :). Good luck with the week ahead :).

The running tights are designed to keep you a bit warmer than normal workout pants. I *love* the Nike Dri-Fit stuff...but I tend to not wear them for runs in the chilly temps b/c they don't offer enough warmth. Unfortunately...the stinkin' winter running stuff is way too overpriced :(. Ugh...I need a new pair of tights but can't stomach the idea of shelling out another $60-70 !!! geesh.

Have a great week. I'll be checking back to see how you are doing. And thank you so much for all the nice comments and support in my journal!

Stacie - morning!! How did the start of W5 go? I did W5D1 myself yesterday also, and it wasn't as bad as i thought, but we have to stick together on this -- day 2 is coming up tomorrow!! LOL
Glad to hear your FIL's doing well.

Good Morning guys!!! Week 5/ Day 1 of C25K is officially "In the books!" I managed to get through it. Day 2 is going to be a doozie though!!! Whew! Hoping to get that in on Wednesday.

So we did have the lasagne and (OMG!) these little garlic knots for dinner--which I ate way too much of! I just love bread and those garlic knots are fantastic! My FIL is getting around well. I just hope he doesn't over do it!

So, instead of :laundy: last night, I :happytv: but I just wasn't that happy! Too tired to smile! I was LAZY!!! I sat in my chair w/ my feet in our little foot/leg massager and then went to bed at 9:15!!!

Amy--Thanks for the info on the pants. I'll have to check into those...yeah, $60-70 may be out of my budget! Geez!!! Hopefully they will have some at the outlet for a bit less!
Allys--Welcome and thanks for stopping in!!!

For you runners out there...I have a question. Do jog/run for all of your time or do you take walk breaks??? Do you schedule them or take them as needed?

I'm pretty sure that even if I make to the point of being able to run 20/30 min straight that I'm not going to do that for the 5K in January. I am currently "scheduled" to complete the C25K the 2nd week of December. I'm pretty sure I'll have to repeat a few more weeks so it may take me til January... I'm not really sure where to go from there???

Thanks for all your comments and support!

Hope everyone has a great day!
Stacie

Stacie - don't know about Jan, but you WILL be running in May!!!! :)

For you runners out there...I have a question. Do jog/run for all of your time or do you take walk breaks??? Do you schedule them or take them as needed?

For the most part, I have stayed true to a 4 minute run/1 minute walk plan since day 1 almost two years ago. I did go through a month long phase where I took no walk breaks, but I decided that it wasn't really beneficial to me. I'm not out to set any world records...I'd rather try to enjoy the runs and races :) So, all of my training and long runs currently employ the 4/1 ratio.

I still to this day have not completed a 5k without walking at least once. I don't stay true to a 4/1 during that event but something about running that hard forces my mind into thinking I need a break so I tend to just take them when I feel that I need to. Funny thing is that I ran the entire half marathon back in October with the exception of walking through a couple water stations.

Breathing has a lot to do with it for me...when I started I went a few months before I really felt comfortable out there in regards to not getting winded. I really think cardio cross training 2-3 times per week in addition to the running helped tremendously with my heart rate/breathing issues.

So long story short...stick to what feels good to you! And unless you are at the front of the pack, you'll find people walking during all parts during races so no worries there :)

Have a good day!

You're doing great, Stacie!:cheer2:

I'm glad to hear that Matt's dad is doing so well. That's good news!:thumbsup2

Have a great day!

Good Morning guys! Just a fly-by update! (BTW, we have no smilies that fly!)

Training... I did aquacise last night and did 20 min of aqua pilates--all ab work. Then relaxed for a few in the jacuzzi before leaving the gym.

I had to return a top to the Gap. Went in to exchange or return, came out $50 lighter (or should I say deeper in dept!)! Go figure! :goodvibes I stopped by the Nike outlet to see if they had any "winter" running pants. I opted to just look around, I was not in the mood to make nice w/ the employees there... They had plenty of dri-fit stuff, but I didn't see much for protection from the cold. I think they have a dri-fit thermal type thing, but I didn't see any. They did have fleece pants, but looked like they were more for lounging...

Today is Day 2 of Week 5. HOPEFULLY... we will get that done tonight. We are going to Wilson (30 min from home, 45/60 min from work) to see my parents tonight. Matt has a Dr appt there so we will stop in, train and eat before he goes to his appt. We are having boiled shrimp and a salad. yum! At least one 1/2 way healthy meal this week! :goodvibes

So, that's about all for now! Thanks for your continued support!!! :grouphug:

Scott--Thanks for your input on the run/walk times... appreciate it! oh, so what are you saying, i'm not going to be in the front of the pack??? JUST KIDDING! :upsidedow We all know I won't be at the front! Probably never will and that is just fine! :) I want to have fun out there too--not kill myself! Thanks again!

Hope everyone has a great day!!! :flower3:
Stacie

Stacie -- good luck with your W5D2 tonight! Keep me posted!! I just finished D2, and it honestly wasn't as bad as i had thought, but i am kinda dreading D3!!

Hi Stacie,

You are doing fantastic! You certainly have the right attitude about the race, it is about having fun, not your time. You might want to check Ebay fo the tights. That is where I found mine.

Take care,
Beth

Hi Stacie,

I happened upon your thread and wanted to say that I am seriously motivated by how far you have come. You are doing so well!! I started the
C25K in August but injured my knee so I had to stop. I am just starting it again this week and you have given me the motivation to really give it my best shot. Maybe I will be out there for the 2009 WDW 5K.

Good luck on the 8 min runs!

Kim

Hi Stacy, I am glad Matt's dad is recovering nicely. How sweet of you to cook them dinner! And my oh my, I do also love garlic knotts! Bread is so good and when its garlic bread its sheer heaven :cloud9: . At least you splurged on something yummy. Good luck finding pants that work for your cold weather workouts. You are doing so great, I am really proud of you!

You are doing a great job, Stacie! Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Your dinner sounds yummy and healthy.:goodvibes

Hope you have a great day!

Hi Woman,

Just checking on you. I know you are busy, so I thought I'd be a pest.

Take care,
Beth

HI STACY!!!

OK...the run/walk question first :). Thought I'd add my 2 cents ;). Like Scott I did the 4/1 run walk all last year. Pretty much all of my runs followed that interval. Lately I've found that I kind of go with whatever works. Some days I tend to do the 4/1, especially on the shorter and faster runs. During the long runs I tend to run most of the distance. Surprisingly I find it easier to get into a "zone" if I don't have to worry about when to walk, etc. It took me a LONG time to get there...and it's very satisfying when I run the whole distance. On the 12 miler, for instance, I walked at the 2 mile marks for about 1 minute. Worked well with my gel/water stops :). During my last Half Marathon I ran the distance just stopping for quick walks at the water stops....I am way too uncoordinated to drink and run at the same time LOL!

I'm having a hard time finding a new pair of winter running pants/tights. I'd prefer normal looking pants but being shrimpy means that's pretty much impossible. They just don't make petite length pants. :confused3 So I'm stuck with those tights...which just aren't attractive at all. LOL. But hey...I have to be warm :). Let me know if you find a good deal anywhere! I'm searching too.

You are doing so great Stacie! I hope you were able to get your workout in yesterday! :goodvibes

Ok, not to hijack Stacie's thread, but what is these "gel packs" that i hear mentioned on different threads??

Stacey (Caitsmama)...Gels are little packets of electrolyte and sugar infused gel that you can take w/ water instead of gatorade. My stomach can't take gatorade or those types of drinks but i can handle the gels. I really like the PowerBar gels :).

Hope that helps!
