St. Louis has the "metro"..which is basically a subway above groud like the "L" in chicago. I have never rode it personally..but my SIL lives in St. Louis and has recommended to us in the past! But.....we always have a car because we drive there.
The STL Zoo..is a very nice Zoo. It is also a free ZOO...so that is a plus. There is a very nice Science Center near the Zoo that has an OMNIMAX theatre!
We live in Central Il..and for my son's ELP(gifted progam) field trip we are heading down there on Wednesday. We are doing both!!!
Cheap motels...are plenty! Downtown or near the Airport is probably your best bets! I know downtown you could catch the metro to the Zoo....I don't know if the metro goes all the way by the airport!
