St. Louis for spring break

The City Museum in downtown on Washington Ave. Washington Avenue is fine, lots of restaurants & small shops. At night several pubs & bars. If you a few blocks off the main streets that's where you could run into trouble. St Louis does have a higher than we like crime rate, but just like in all major cities you need to be aware of your surroundings. At least we gave up the #1 spot
I would most certainly not walk to Crown Candy Kitchen, but feel perfectly safe taking my 2 kids to the City Museum or any attraction in Forest Park by myself.
I think North & East St Louis are the "less safe" area's of town. South & West are much safer in my opinion.

Hello again,

Had a wonderful time on my trip. St. Louis is a great place to visit.

On the first day, after an 8 hour drive. We ate at Pappys BBQ and loved it.

Second day went to the City Museum. We walked there from our hotel. Went back to the hotel much later in the day and drove to Crown Candy Kitchen which we also loved. One suggestion is to split the sandwiches and shakes between two people.

Day 3, spent the whole day at the Arch (while standing in line to pay for movie and elevator someone handed me some coupons which was great) and the Westward Expansion Museum. Ate at an Imo's.

Day 4, went to Cahokia Mounds and then to St. Louis Zoo. Ate at the zoo.

Sounds like a fun trip!! Did the kids like City Museum? I have never heard of the Cahokia Mounds before. I had to look them up. What did you think of them? Worth the trip?

We have been wanting to come to St. Louis for a long weekend. Is it possible to fly in and get around without a car? Or is Metra not very good or safe? We would like to see the arch, museum and science center.
Thanks!

It is possible to get around via Metro and Bus, but there is no way I would do it. St. Louis is easy to drive around, so I'd get a car.
