SSR Question

We bought in April and won't be taking our first trip for a while. The only time I have been to SSR was to make the purchase, and I have to admit that I didn't stay long or really check out much of the place.

Is there a central "main area" like you would get in a Disney hotel? While I am not a fan at all of the big box hotels like the Contemporary, I really, really, really love hotels like Port Orleans Riverside. At POR, you have that quaintness of the outer buildings, yet you can pop into the main building for the restaurants and that "energetic buzz" feeling (music, people moving about, excitement). When I picture SSR, I am kind of picturing a layout somewhat like POR. Am I right in assuming that there is some type of main building where all of the action is at? If not, I will really miss that.

If POR had DVC, I would have bought it in a minute.

Hmmmm....

So my first inclination was to say that the main area at SSR is a hub of activity with the main pool, SPA, Artist Pallet Dining, The Turf Club Restaurant, and the store.

Definitely once you move away from this are, things are quieter but you still have pocket pools to enjoy.

But then I re-read your post and saw the reference to music and thought, well, it's not THAT lively in the main area.

However you are really close to DTD so if night life and action/activity are your thing, then this is a great resort.

We always enjoy being able to jump on a boat and get to DTD for some walking, browsing, and people watching as well as dining. But what we love most about SSR is that when we're back at the hotel, it's easy to detach and decompress without a ton of activity around the room to hangout.

So the answer is, kind of?

Yes, the layout of SSR's villas, main building & sprawling grounds will remind you a bit of POR. We loved POR as our favourite (less than Deluxe) resort pre-DVC.

Thank you for the replies! I am really going to miss POR, but this seems like a more luxurious version of it so I am very optimistic. The proximity to DTD is going to be huge.

Does anyone know the plans for DTD? I read a thread last month on another one of these Disboards boards that said that it will soon be VERY different than it currently is. Or perhaps that was just Pleasure Island?

Another question....How is the turf club? I always see people talking about AP, but not TC.

We ate there right after they opened and it wasn't a good experience. Food took long to come out, steaks were cooked wrong, and worst of all we were with my in-laws and my mother in law is a "mess up once and you're done" kind of person when it comes to restaurants.

Truth be told, even on the times my wife and I have been back, the experience has kept us form going back.

Anyone have more recent and better experiences?

My wife and I were just there last week and we loved it. We ate there twice and would go back.

We ate at the Turf Club in March and thought it was great. We are going back to SSR in August and plan to eat there again.

OUR experience at Turf Club (described earlier in this post) was tragic in terms of noise.

We had the misfortune of dining with the loudest people on Earth, including the table next to us which had one person screaming at the top of her lungs. It was terrible! We almost dropped our appointment to see our guide to add on more SSR points, we were so upset. We went back to our room with powerful headaches. We should have dined outdoors, but the screamer we had seated next to us arrived just as we were waiting for our desserts and coffee.

This situation was not really the fault of Turf Club per se, but rather just a bad set of circumstances. (Although the servers could have asked the screamer to pipe down or leave, which they didn't.) I will go back. The food was great. I will also sit outdoors at TC or I will not go at all.

I've only experienced such tragedy once before and it was Whispering Canyon. In that case, it was the fault of the restaurant! The staff there are trained to scream at the top of their lungs, as part of the "experience".

Actually, the main area at SSR does have music playing. I enjoy the Jazz tracks they play at the pool. They also play more upbeat music. I recall the quiet pools having music also.

I think the main area is very lively and active, without being too overwhelming with people. AP can get busy at times, but it is easier to escape the chaos at SSR than most resorts without being totally isolated.

It is nice to be so close to DTD where it can be packed with people and then take a nice boat ride back to the elegance of SSR. Sometimes when im at DTD, I look over at SSR and I am so happy to be so close to home!
