Hello all -

We've been looking at DVC for about a year now. We've talked to Tom, our guide, on the phone and he's been extremely helpful.

DH and I were on a business trip at the Swan last week and took the DVC tour with Mike. Needless to say, we were impressed and we know DVC is in our future. DH wanted to purchase at that time using our HE Line of credit. I'd rather save and pay cash. We decided to wait and save just to be safe (you just never know in this economy...and we're a one income family).

Anyway...toward the end of our tour, Mike said that since we've now taken the tour, the discount ($79 per point rather than $89) is only valid for 3 days. This was totally new news to me, and it left a bad taste in my mouth after a wonderful, no pressure tour. Can someone verify this? We were initially given the impression that the discount was available through 10/31, and certainly no one forewarned us that we'd be giving up our discount opportunity by taking the tour.

I'm on the verge of changing my mind and going ahead with the purchase...but I'm certainly not going to do it now without the discount.

Thanks to all of you for your help. It seems like every time a DVC question pops into my mind, the answer is waiting for me here next time I log on. The knowledge here is amazing and you are all very kind to share it.

Katie

If you're ready to buy, then buy. If not then don't.

The thing is that Disney can discontinue the discount at any time.
However, we were told the discount would stop being offered in Sept.

There's just no way to know until it actually happens.

we paid cash, so i dont know if my theory is correct, but if you finance it, and you make no payments until spring, and theres a 15 day right of recision, then couldnt you buy now and back out as late as then?

i talked to my salesman, ron ,last night -he said the special was on until the end of october and then it was going down to 5 dollars a point discount and they would see how they were selling

I took the tour a couple of weeks ago, and was also surprised by the 3 day decision point. Had I known, I may not have taken the tour... I was also told by my salesman that now that I was on "the list" as someone they had investied marketing effort on, they would be less likely to allow a resale purchase go through with my name on it if I chose to buy on the resale market. I was also left with a bad taste...

All that said, I just signed all the paperwork last night. Looking forward to next year's stay at SS.

I remember talking to my guide about the 3 day offer on the phone. He mentioned to me that he could make the offer as long as it was available while he talked to me on the phone, but once we toured the offer could only be extended for 3 days. The intersting part was that when a new resort opened the offer kind of gets reset and you can tour again. We first looked when BWV was open and was made the 3 day offer and we decided not to buy at that time when BCV was offered for sale, he told me the slate was clean and he could make the offer for whatever their deal was at that time. My understanding is that it is something in the laws of the states, not a DVC thing.

These posts make me sad - This sounds like the kind of intimidation I've gotten at other timeshare sales talks - not the way I remember our no-hassle, no pressure DVC experience.

With units selling quickly it doesn't seem like they would need to resort to this.

That is so bogus about blocking the resale. They can only block it if they purchase it themselves. We toured in 2001 and proceeded to buy a BWV resale with no problem.

Thanks all. At least I know it applies to everyone and it wasn't just something our tour guide was trying on us.

I'm not impressed with the trickery, though. The gentleman outside the DVC building gave us a flyer with the October 31st deadline information and Mike confirmed it. I wouldn't have a problem with a three day offer it if they let people know about it *before* taking the tour.

Nothing very magical about this. bjgjl, I have to agree with you. SSR seems to be selling really well. Our guide said they had over 100 tours scheduled for Saturday, when they normally have about 60.

The rest of our your was very low pressure, though. It was like sitting in my livingroom with a knowledgeable DVCer. :
:)

Maybe I'm out of the loop but this just doesn't sound right.

Why would you have to buy within 3 days of taking the tour?

My guide never said anything to us about this. He said the discount would run through the end of October. Of course, we added on over the phone and were offered the discount but this was after many conversations and some delays. Our guide never said to call him because it would expire in 3 days.

Is this something they HAVE to do or a sales tactic?

If anyone finds out for sure what is going on let us know.

There are currently 2 different price deals going on. One for the general public and one for the current DVC members. Current members who want to add on have until 10/31 to do so and receive all of there points and the discount. New people to DVC have 3 days from the tour. They have in the past extended the days if you need more time to think, but they won't wait months, probably a few more days. This is to get you to really think about the idea. Either you want to buy or you want to wait. hey will probably have a MB program somewhere down the road if sales start to decrease..

The comment about it being like other time shares is not correct. At least DVC lets you take home info and think about it. They are not telling you buy now or never, they are saying that the special price is only good for a few days. I know it may sound harsh but they don't want the problem of people coming back a year from now and saying why can't I have the price you quoted me. When we first looked a year ago we were told we had 1 month to decide to get the MB. We decided against and then waited until we saw them offering again and then decided to buy.

Hope this info helped

My wife and I bought into SSR last month while we where on her first trip to Disney.

While we were on the tour we asked the guide if we could go home and thing about it. This was on Sep. 13. He said that the deal was good through the end of Sep. and may or may not be extended to Oct. He said he didn't know yet. None the less he lead us to believe that we could take all the time we needed. When we decided to sign up whatever deals available at the time we did sign up is what we would get. I.E. He didn't limit it to 3 days.

Albeit, a couple hours of questions later and we signed up. ;)

Even though I have seen the deal offered through the end of October, when we took the tour earlier this month, we were told we had to buy before we left WDW to get the offer.

Perhaps some of the guides is using this as their bully tatic if they sense the person is not likely to buy that day?

When we bought last year, we were in discussions with Disney and Timeshare Store at the same time. Resale proceeded faster than direct purchase and we had just cleared ROFR on resale before we gave deposit on BCV. Our guide even congratulated us on our OKW purchase when we called to put a deposit on BCV.

I believe that they exercise ROFR based on other factors, such as protecting a price floor and satisfying wait listed members. I do not believe they black ball potential members that tour. There is no need for them to do so.

We were also given the 3-day discount limit when we toured. I agree that this is something that should be mentioned BEFORE you schedule your tour, not at the end. While we did tour on our last full day at WDW, the 3 days were over on the day we arrived home. And for people who tour at the start of their vacation, the 3 days will expire while they're still at WDW. Personally, I want to enjoy my vacation and not think about financial and future plans until I get back to the "real world".
Because we felt rushed, we had pretty well made up our minds to pass on DVC at this time. But when I called on the third day, our guide was out sick! She called the next day and extended the discount offer, answered all our questions, and we felt much better and ended up buying.

Well, don't forget this offer has been available for a couple of months now. It does have to end sometime. I am sure this is not a high pressure sales tactic--just Disney's way of warning that the deal is going to end soon. It would be worse if potential purchasers came back to purchase in a few weeks, only to find out the deal didn't exist anymore and being upset that nobody had told them it was going to end!

Kind of a double-edged sword here.

Katie,
My family and I were visiting the Boardwalk in August and did the tour totally out of the blue.
Having done the tour we were so impressed we decided to give it serious thought as soon as we returned home from our vacation.

Obviously these decisions are not taken overnight and after a couple of weeks of further research we decided to go ahead, only to be told that, having taken the tour, the $79 offer was no longer on the table.

On the positive side of all this, I called my guide back and told her that my signing up was dependant on the $79 offer. She said she'd talk to her manager and see if anything could be done, next day she called me back and gave us the OK @ $79.

I don't know if I was just lucky in this situation or not but it's worth talking to the guide again and ask them if there's anything they can do.
Good Luck,
Steve...

We we took the tour we were told that we had until they end of our stay to take advantage of the offer, but we had also received some material at home with the Oct 31 end date so would have tried to use that if we needed more decision time.

poohj80; We were told the same thing, only problem was that we toured within hours going home. We did decide to buy, and I think that it did convince us to right then and there, but we probably would have anyway if we were given an aditional 3 days. So that was a bit of pressure there, but not really since we had been hemming and hawing over buying since 1995.

Our guide (Mayra) also mentioned that this deal was going on until the 31st.
Remember too that the sales people are salaried and don't recieve commission so unless there is another really good incentive to sell I don't think that they would have any real "hard" sell tactics.

Mayra is our guide as well. Has anyone been successful at getting her on the phone? :teeth:
