Squished Penny Machines, an addiction?

What are these books you are talking about?

I am going this September (first time in 30 years) and I had heard about the pressed penny machines so I am taking a bunch of 2006 pennies with me to press.

So what are these books and where do you get them?

Thanks!

Remember, each "pressed penny" costs $0.51 - 2 quarters plus the penny!

My DD8 and I set aside a special piggy bank for quarters & pennies only, which we will open up before our trip. Unfortunately, the pennies add up much quicker than the quarters, but the leftover pennies will go to the annual Penny Drive at her school in December.

We've bought several M&M Mini's tubes (which she GLADLY emptied) to store them in, as suggested earlier.

Some may think it's a waste, but since we've been putting the coins aside for the last few months, it's not a big "chunk" out of our vacation spending fund!

I love doing presed pennies. I may go home tonight and sort out the pre 1982 pennies in my house........you know........so I can feel like I'm getting ready for my trip in 6 months. I would like to display my pennies. Any ideas? I likes the necklace idea too! Maybe I'll go by a jewelry making shop.

So you guys think the older pennies work better? I went through our change jar and only found 11 older pennies. Does it make a big difference? Is it worth trying to find more old pennies? I have an ADHD son, this may end up being a great thing to keep him focused. We can use this penny pressing thing as a carrot for him. I printed out that pdf list, so he can keep track of the ones we find and use a map to help us find others. I'll make this an educational thing (learn to read maps).

They hold your pennies and are themselves considered to be collectibles by some folks. You can get them in the parks or prior to your trip.

Just so you know what they look like, here's a link to one available at LaughingPlace: http://www.laughingplacestore.com/Product-5679.asp

If you'd like to read more about elongated pennies, as they're called, and what kinds of pennies work best, visit Mouseplanet's site: http://www.mouseplanet.com/merchandise/aam030806lt.htm

They also discuss the downside of using plastic book holders for long-term storage.

Also, one of the reasons we like to collect these is the hunt for them, sort of like Hidden Mickeys.

A great idea! I love it when parents find a way to make the parks fun and educational!

Realistically, how many pressed pennies do you think you can get in a day? Not just doing that of course, but over the course of a day as you just happen upon the machines?

I have printed out some lists of where some of them are and my son is going to map out a strategy to find them. I am trying to teach him map reading but its not going too well. I am hoping that we can just 'happen upon' 5 or 6 a day, so he can have some success. I dont want this to consume us, but I wanted to know how many to expect to easily find in a day at a park?

im planning on taking $5 worth of quarters, thats 10 pennies a day, i can get.

try walking thou the stores as many of the machines are in them and the train stations. all the penny machines i have seen inWDW are indoors.

ok before we went on our May trip, my boyfriend actually started trading in the newer pennies for ones made before 1982 (no zinc in them before '82 = no silver/black streak on the pressed version) and we got a recipe for a "penny shine" to brighten them up. Worked really well but then we stupidly put the shiny/clean pennies in the same wallet with the quarters so they got dirty again. LoL we'll be more careful this time.....So yes, Id say you can get addicted to this!

My kids LOVE them. I save change in a jar all year just for this. I just bought some pressed penny books off Ebay very cheap for our Nov. vacation!!! (I also bought autograph books with pens)

thankss

oh and does anyone know what kind of characters are in front of the penny books? do they have any tinkerbelle ones? :wizard:

All three of my kids had a great time with the pressed pennies. We were recently at the Rainforest Cafe near our home and discovered they had a pressed penny machine there! The kids just about flipped, they were so excited. We had to get one of each design. :thumbsup2

It reminded us of Disney and we all got nostalgic. It reminded us of all the fun we had finding pressed penny machines on our trip. We never even look very hard, we just happened upon them all over the World.

We love pressed pennies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday my DD8 and I started sorting through the pennies and quarters we've been saving for a few months now. We sorted out the pre-1982 pennies which was actually fun. She couldn't believe there were some as old & even older than me (1971). :rolleyes1 I put catsup on 1/2 of a dirty old penny as an "experiment" while we sorted and she was thrilled to see the results (I'll admit it, so was I!). But because we had more pennies than catsup I decided to pour vinegar with some salt over the pennies and it worked great!! We then scrubbed the sticky ones with a toothbrush and then rinsed them all and laid out to dry. Last night she filled the M&M Mini's tubes she so eagerly emptied the last few weeks. We still need lots more quarters (only have 135 so far) but we have 51 LONGGGGGG days to go yet.
