Squirrel! Update.

Awww...a little cutie.

Do you have a wild life rescue in your area? You might give them a call tomorrow.

I had a pet squirrel as a child. We kept it in a cage in the house, but as soon as I got home from school, he was let out to hang out with me. His favorite place was the back of my neck, nestled in my hair.

I've been seeing some stories of people who take in birds or squirrels to help them, then when they get better and they gradually let them go, they sort of stick around and sometimes come back to visit!

We (girlfriend's family) rescued a near new born deer laying on the road next to it's dead mother. Set up a bed in the old unused fireplace in the unfinished basement. Raised it up and let it go. We put an orange vest on it and could see it out in the woods with a herd of deer.

Every night at 6 pm it clomped at the door and in it would walk for dinner. It was full grown and still doing this. One day it stopped coming down to the house. We could still see it up in the woods.

Thanksgiving evening, everyone is sitting around the table ready to feast and something was pounding on the door. Opened the door and in walked the deer. It's like it came for Thanksgiving dinner one last time.

Neatest thing I ever did.

I'm sorry - honestly thought thread was going here !

Aww. We rescued baby deer mice and kept them as pets. Mom had been killed in a trap in our basement, then tiny babies appeared out of nowhere. They didn't even have their eyes open yet.
If we'd released them they probably would've wound up living in our house anyway. 😄

Several years ago I fed a beautiful grey squirrel peanut butter sandwiches every day all summer long. He/she would even come up and jump on our screen door and let me feed it to him. It was so much fun. But he stopped coming once winter came. :(

He only ate Jif Crunchy. ;)

I don't know much about squirrels. One did get in my mom's house once. I was young, afraid and we had a hard time getting him out.

Last week, hubby and I went for our usual walk and one literally followed us about 3 1/2 blocks. We got to the point where we had to run across a busy street to lose him. Is this common?

I rescued a squirrel about 10 years ago. It had been abandoned with it's eyes still closed on an indoor soccer field of all places. I raised him and kept him for about 6 months until I finally decided that it was best to hand him over to a wildlife rehab facility. It was one of the saddest things I ever did, but probably the best for the squirrel. I remember walking away while he looked at me from his cage and it reminded me so much of the The Fox and the Hound when Big Mama had to leave Tod behind in the forest.

My older son hand raised an abandoned baby squirrel. It bonded to him and will nip at anyone else who tries to interact with her. His original goal was to release it when it was old enough, but he is now concerned it would not know what danger was. Also, be aware, some municipalities do not allow people to take in wild animals as pets.

This is the exact reason why I gave mine to a wildlife rehab facility. Since the squirrel had now become imprinted, they needed to teach it how to be a "real" squirrel again, and not a pet squirrel in order to be able to survive on it's own.

In the winter the squirrels knock on my door and window for nuts. They are self sufficient in the summer. They've yet to destroy my property.
