Springtime Surprise 2026 (Apr 16-20)

How far ahead is everyone tapering before the challenge? I just got back to running after injury and trying to figure out if I push myself to add distance the week before (10th) or not. I won’t be able to get the full distance in before the race weekend but each week full of training will get me closer. I don’t want to over do it but want to be as ready as I can be.
I prefer shorter tapers and I consider that to be two weeks instead of three. I don’t add miles but don’t usually decrease, just really dial back intensity. I definitely wouldn’t add in miles a week out. Maybe add an extra run in at easy pace 2-3 weeks out to up the mileage. You are more ready than you think, you’ve got this!

Yeah I really wanted to get the spirit jersey for this weekend because I love spirit jerseys and the yellow color was a nice change from the recent blue/purple/pink side of the color wheel. But this is blech. Why would they not put the characters on the back!? Oh well glad I didn't pre-order it.

My daughter (17) and I (58!) are doing the SS for the first time/first Disney race. I am not in great shape, and have not done the training that I had hoped to do, but I can walk a 5K at a moderate pace, so I think I should be OK/finish? My daughter did XC in the fall so should be a bit better off, but she has not been running at all. Wish us luck!
My question is, for the SS do people need any sort of sweatshirt (or I was thinking of ordering mylar blankets?) for the early morning?

While I would never say never, it is incredibly unlikely. The low temps for the next 10 days are in the mid-60's. Springtime has historically been hot and icky-sticky from start to finish.

5k technically doesn't sweep right now (that might change in some way starting with the new format of the 5k at Wine and Dine but nobody knows how that's going to go). As long as you keep it moving you'll be good. Might be able to do photo ops, but they will eventually close lines as it gets later and if they get too long.

Thank you! I didn't hear about/realize there was a new format coming up....I'll have to check that out.

They're expanding the 5k field and range of start times (you could potentially start at 4:30 now, and I think the starts might run later than they currently do), so there might be implications for the pace requirements.

Interesting...thank you!
