Spring breakers...Florida beaches

You know why places are open? Because they have bills and they realize that it’s going to be really, really rough.

By the end of the year, we will have record unemployment, people who can’t pay their heat, definitely can’t afford Christmas gifts, can’t afford to travel, 401k’s gone, working extra years (some until the day they die)...but hey, this is what some of you wanted.

What we are doing now will directly or indirectly hurt every person on Earth. We’ve definitely made the virus jealous because the damage we’ve done to ourselves is no match.

Nobody and I will shout it, NOBODY wanted this!

:sad2:

Buying Christmas gifts isn’t really on my mind right now. It’s containing this beast, so that I can get on with my life. It’s the folks that fail to take it seriously that are going to drag this thing on.

I took their comment to mean people wanting the closures even though that wouldn’t totally stop the virus, but would decimate the economy. Personally I think both the health and economic aspects are extremely important and it’s going to be very hard to balance one against the other.

No one wanted the virus, that’s for sure.

I find it more crazy that I go to my local stores and it is wall to wall elderly people. Seriously. The college kids are going to survive. These old people will not. Get on home Grandpa.

Extremely annoying. And, wrong. Where the hell are the parents of these kids?????!?!
They got on the planes with them or drove them down or paid for them to go. They were busy being their kids FRIEND instead of being a PARENT. Frankly I am seriously worried about the future of this country after seeing these images. Seriously these self absorbed, selfish, trashy MORONS are the future of our country! YIKES! And as for Florida- don't come crying to the rest of us for more health care providers, hospital beds or ventilators. NO VENTILATORS FOR YOU!

Some of you folks might want to read some actual Florida news to learn what is actually going on. The cluelessness is amusing.

And you might also want to review the DIS posting guidelines regarding politics.

I think in 10 years we will look back at 2020 as the year the global economy crashed. Covid will be a byline.

And I will calmly say...there are severe consequences for wanting the world to shutdown. You don’t get to pick and choose.

That is my point. Nobody wants the world to shutdown. I cannot get political, but think about it. Really think about it. No way would we do what we are doing with our current leader unless we had to.

It is a very difficult choice. 2 weeks ago we were living in a great place with our lives and economy. Now I don't even want to think about my 401K. My families livelihood is wrapped in the airline industry -- we are taking a brutal beating. Brutal. I hate this.

But the science is telling us what we need to do. We will move on. We will get past this.

(*edited out a quote that was changed, too political :))

You do realize that the majority of the people are out of state spring breakers, right? I live here, I had a beach trip planned, and I cancelled. The people who live here want these people to go home and no one visit for at least a couple weeks (or longer). The longer they keep coming, the longer we have to stay home and not work.

Spoke with a coworker today- her friend’s son was on vaca at Panama Beach- kid just returned home where he’s living with parents (college closed)- lo & behold a kid in his traveling group has COVID-19. That whole group likely brought it back to their home state and family members...

As a FL resident, i'm equally appalled. It's majority non FL residents out there, because "it's their spring break and they aren't going to loose out on it". Also, many beaches have already been shut down. I know in my county, one of the highest tourist areas, they are saying they will stay open so the hotels don't loose money. Give me a flipping break. Everyone is loosing money, you aren't special.

There is definitely an overwhelming cluelessness/not my problem vibe. I had to go to urgent care today for an injury, and in a largely empty waiting room, this coughing woman and her coughing kids decided the best place to sit was directly next to me, not even a seat between. Dozen of empty chairs throughout the room. Like...what?

As a Floridian, I'm surprised to hear this. Which beaches are still hosting spring breakers? Our beaches in South Florida are closed. My city has shut down all non-essentials. We also have a 10:00 pm curfew.

From the email sent to residents:
All restaurants, bars, taverns, pubs, night clubs, banquet halls, cocktail lounges, cabarets, breweries, cafeterias, casinos, pari-mutuels, entertainment complexes and any other alcohol and/or food service business establishment within the City shall close on-premises service.

This order shall not apply to delivery services, pick-up, or takeout services provided by any of the establishments listed in the previous paragraph. Furthermore, this order shall not apply to grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and convenience stores.

Pretty sure Clearwater was/is open. I think I saw pics of huge crowds there.

And I might have checked to see if hotel prices had plummeted yet. :-X

Hey don't hate on all us FL people. I've been in my house for days and days, the majority of the people on the beaches are not actually from FL.

Should the govenor be doing more? Yes, but he's kind of screwed either way. That is a massive amount of people to do something with, a massive amount of money - and it would also be very hard to actually enforce shutting down the beaches. I'm not saying he shouldn't do it - it's annoying me that these people are making the spread worse in my community, just saying it would be very hard.

Edit to add: all the local news outlets run polls - and they are overwhelmingly in favor of shutting the beaches down, its just that us citizens don't get to make the actual decisions.
