Spring Break 2008 - trip ideas needed

We're thinking of going out to CA for spring break. We'd do 3 days at Disney parks (2 dl & 1 CA)...but then we'd like to spend the remaining 7 days somewhere else....I'd like to at least hit the SD Zoo, if only for my kids to see the Pandas. Not big UNiversal fans....girls are too old for legoland. We just did SeaWorld Orlando last year.

Any ideas? I was thinking Mission Beach? maybe rent a condo?

I'd like to spend one day in Hollywood, just seeing the sights....but don't need to stay close.

I'm not opposed to having a "home base" hotel for the whole trip and driving 1 hour or so any way to get somewhere.

San Diego is 2 hours away from LA/Hollywood. I am going at the end of March 2008 to San Diego and I just hope it isn't that busy.

So where are you staying? Are you staying close to DL & just doign that? I'd really like to squeeze as much of southern cal into one trip as possible. We've never been there...it seems like flights from Chicago to California are always sooooo expensive.
