We are leaving for Disney World in a week and as luck would have it I sprained my ankle yesterday. I'm doing everything I can to get better before the trip but am concerned I might need to get a wheelchair when there. Does anyone know if I will need a doctor's note to rent one? Is there anything else that I need to do just in case I don't heal up in time?

You will not need a doctor's note, anyone can rent a wheelchair. One thing to consider, if you do rent a wheelchair, someone in your party will need to push you around, not always an easy task. You might consider renting an ECV. My wife has mobility issues and this was a much better option for us than a wheelchair.

I would plan on getting an ECV and hope you don't need it. As someone who has dealt with ankle sprains a lot, if it is bad enough now that you think you may need a wheelchair, you likely will need an ECV at some point during your trip just because of the sheer amount of walking

If you are staying on property, the rental places will deliver a chair or scooter right there. we use Apple Scooters. also Kingdom is good. just google disney scooter rental.

I would suggest an ECV as well. It will also help you to feel more independent.

Make sure you are using compression in the form of an ace bandage. And make sure that you ice at the end of the touring day.

If necessary, you can also visit first aid to ice mid day. I did this on my December trip a year ago. I had broken my ankle that March and while healed, due to pregnancy and lots of walking, it ballooned one day. (This was quite unexpected given it had been many months since my ankle healed and it just happened this one day if our week long vacation.) First aid just let me hang out while I iced and elevated my ankle. So don't be afraid to visit to do that if you feel the need.

It's most likely not going to be well enough to walk on all day so yes, you are going to need to rent a wheelchair for at least part of the day. I sprained mine about a week before a dive trip and was able to walk on it but kept a compression bandage on it all the time except when diving but we don't walk half as much when diving as when you do at Disney. We've rented a wheel chair while there many times for my mother who had Lupus and couldn't walk for long periods and the last time we were there about day 3 I hit the back of my sons huge shoe and broke my toe. I tried to man up (I'm a woman but we all know we can handle pain) but after they had to keep waiting for me to hobble, my son and a CM got tired of it and the CM went and got us one. My son pushed it with no problems and I pushed my mom with no problems, I wouldn't have trusted her with an ECV and she could walk around the resort and to the parks so we didn't need to be bothered with it on the buses. They do have those cool little knee scooters that you just rest the one leg on and walk with the other one, better than a crutch and you still aren't walking on it. You could probably rent one of those local.

I've done Disney several times with a bad ankle. I would definitely look into renting a scooter. If you rent one in the park, you have to turn it in at that park. If you rent one from one of the offsite places it is much cheaper and they deliver to most resorts. I used Apple Scooter and I was very pleased with them. I hope it heals up soon. Between two surgeries, I spent over 8 months on crunches and 3 additional months in a cam walker. See an ortho if it isn't better in a week or two. I enjoyed the scooter sometimes, and other times it was an inconvenience. But I am so happy my situation was temporary and I don;t need a scooter any more. Good luck and have a great trip!!
