Sports team snacks??

This idea for a treat was requested by the Coach. He feels that the kids deserve some kind of treat after playing so hard during the game. Concession was a big hit with the kids so they will be sad to not have it.

I think it's still pretty normal to have many sports teams that still do snacks no matter the age. My ds is 11 and plays soccer, football, and basketball basically year round,, and he has always had a snack list and snack/drink at the end of each game, and I don't see it ending anytime soon.

I did hotdogs as a snack once a season, and the boys loved it. I boiled the hotdogs at home and some fresh water in another pan. I used one of the pyrex 9X13 glass dishes that came with a carrier and heated pack. I put the hotdogs in the dish, poured a little fresh boiling water over them, and put them in the carrier. They stayed nice and hot until snack time. When it was time to serve, I had another mom hold open the bun while I put the hodog in. The boys loved it and were so excited when we were the snack family.

Great idea with the hot dogs! We do oranges for halftime snacks for football. Chips and Gatorade for basketball. Granola bars, gummy snacks. They love it all.

I have done the hotdogs for other play dates tho I wrapped dog in bun in Reynolds sheets!?! Pyrex is good idea also never thought of it:-)

My dd8's rec-leve soccer team does snacks. My dd10 is on club and travel teams...and they don't do snack any longer. Sometimes the team will hit an ice cream stand after a game together, but nothing organized ahead of time.

That said...my girls always thought snack was fun. Some things we've done (and our league wasn't a super healthy emphasis):

Frozen Go-Gurts, washed apples, clementines, goldfish crackers, cheese crackers, fruit strips, string cheese, individually packed bags of baby carrots, etc.

Drinks: water bottles, capri suns, juice boxes, gatorade, sunny-D, those plastic kool-aid things (like I said, not always the healthiest)....

I took watermelon cut into wedges and bananas today. The watermelon was gone in a flash and about 1/2 of the bananas were gone. They asked for watermelon again for the fruit.

I don't think these 11/12yr old boys are going to appreciate cut up fruit as an alternative. ;) They will be looking for the junk snacks!

You'd be surprised. Like others have said, a cut-up watermelon is usually really popular and people also tend to enjoy grapes, bananas, and clementines/oranges.

I bet if you offered some fruit alongside some bags of chips or popcorn you'd get plenty of happy takers. Just because "it's always been that way" doesn't mean it can't change.

Grapes and watermelon have been the favorite choices for the past two weekends of games. When the kids are exerting that much energy it just isn't a good idea to give them "craptastic" food as a snack. (That's what we call it in our house. ) It's like that commercial on tv with the kid dressed up like French fries and the mom says "You are what you eat!" When their choice is to eat healthy foods at a game, it guides them the right way with food choices at other times also. Our coaches all talk to them about putting healthy things in their bodies so they stay strong. There are over 30 kids on our two teams and I had more than half find me and thank me for the watermelon.

As a soccer coach who has coached many different age groups through the years, the kids look forward to the snacks after the games. My youngest is now on an Under 12 team and the kids get bummed if the snacks are forgotten. For some kids this is the only "treat" they get.

I always bring individual packs of pretzels or crackers or chips, individual packs of cookies, rice krispie treats or fruit snacks like fruit by the foot, and a capri sun, gatorade, or koolaid pouch. I do check for allergy/diabetic kids and I do let my parents know if we have any food allergies on the team. I try to make sure all the players can be included. They all play hard so they should all be included in the treat.

Fruits like oranges and such tend to make kids sticky and bring the bees out so we do avoid them during the games.
