I called the credit card company that we used to charge our Delta plane tickets on. The person I spoke to said that, even though I bought these tickets back in January, if in fact we're unable to use the tickets in May due to Delta folding, we'd still be able to submit a claim to dispute the charges, due to not fulfilling the service part of the purchase.
He also said that if and when this happens with Delta, ALL of the credit card companies will be given information on how to handle these claims. He said he worked there the last time it happened, and they were given exact instructions on how to handle the claims from customers who were stuck with unusable tickets.
At least I know that even though I bought the tickets back in January, I'll have the possibility of submitting a claim in May, if we can't fly Delta. He didn't say there was a guarantee of a positive outcome, but at least I wasn't told that there's no way we'd be able to recover the loss.
