Spoiling The Magic

Does anyone else wonder sometimes that if spending too much time on these forums would, in turn, "spoil the magic" of Disney and make it seem less special when you're there?

I know this is kind of stupid and off the wall, but I was just wondering...

I planned. I planned a lot for our trip 6/3-6/10. A neighbor and her family were at WDW the same week. We stayed at Pop, they stayed at ASMovies.

We had vastly different experiences. They didn't plan.

They didn't want to do the dining plan, we did. They ended up driving off site twice a day for meals to save money. We enjoyed lots of great meals in the parks and at the resorts and were completely immersed in Disney the whole time. Their cost for the dining plan would have been $480 for the nights they stayed at disney. Their food costs for those same 6 days? $500 with NO table service meals at all. Had they taken time to look at menus and consider their families needs, they may have ended up actually saving money and enjoying their trip more.

They didn't decide what park they were going to until they woke up each morning of their trip. I used TGM's green days as my guide to touring. They didn't even look at the park hours sheet to see who had EMH.

They waited in lines all week long. We used fast passes constantly and waited in 2 lines in 7 days! They didn't "understand" fast passes so they just ignored them. (Waiting 90 minutes to ride Peter Pan??, hitting fantasy land between 11-1pm?? ugh) If she'd even looked at the info on the park map, she'd have saved tons of time in lines.

They waited in lines for characters' autographs. She said they waited over an hour for the princesses in toontown. We scheduled Character meals and saw 5 princesses in about 30 minutes and enjoyed lunch! (Back to the lack of research on the dining plan!)

They didn't want to use disney busses because the lines seemed long the first day they arrived. So they drove every day. They said it took them about an hour to get to the park gates from their hotel room. We used disney busses exclusively and it never took us more than 45 minutes from room door to park gate (including waiting and transit). What they didnt' realize is that a bus holds a lot of people and they are almost constantly arriving at the resort to take you to the parks. (especially at the value resorts!)

So, if you were in doubt whether you are planning too much, I'd say you can't really overplan! But you can absolutely underplan!!!! I didn't find knowing "too" much was a concern. Maybe because I didn't have totally astronomical expections. I knew the value resort rooms would be comparable in size and quality to a motel. I was pleasantly surprised that they were so clean, the resort was spotless. I loved the mousekeeper's daily posing of the stuffed animals we left in the room. They even posed the soap so it looked like Mickey was standing up. Their attention to detail exceeded our expectations. Our little doses of pixie dust were just as unexpected and wonderful as if I had been clueless (maybe moreso because I knew that it's not something that normally happens like when a CM grabbed my dd's autograph book and made sure she got Pluto's autograph even though Goofy had come to relieve him. ( all because she heard my child sigh and say, I guess we'll have to get in line another day, mommy, we already met Goofy- she wasn't whining, just matter of fact) )We got some great photos of both Pluto and Goofy playing with my dd. If I didn't really know that's not how it happened, I would not have been as pleased with the interaction.

I think that a lot of the restaurant disappointment comes with the prices at Disney. If service was slow at a terrific steak place at home, we'd still enjoy the steak. Maybe not tell people about it, but we'd enjoy our meal. If service is slow at Le Cellier and you are spending $200+ for dinner for 2 a/2 c, you are going to be more critical of the meal and you'll tell people to not bother. Or if character interaction isn't great at a breakfast buffet, you'll pass that on because you just spent almost $100 for a little fruit and some lukewarm scrambled eggs and greasy bacon. Had you spent $30, you'd just let it go.

I just read on another forum that the food at Boma was tasteless and bad. Turns out, they'd had a bad day with their child being injured and no one was feeling very good. That totally can color your entire experience. So was the food tasteless? or did this family just not really feel much like eating because of the day they had? I try to take most reviews with a grain of salt.

Not for me! :goodvibes Dh and I were lucky enough to visit WDW every other year for a number of years. Since our honeymoon in 2004, we have not had the chance to go back due to traveling to other places such as Vegas, Caribbean, a cruise etc. We are hoping to get to WDW in 2007! Either way, DISing helps me to relive the magic through everyone else's visits to the world! I love seeing pictures, reading reviews and hearing stories about everyone's trips. So for me, it only makes it that much more special when we get there again!

Woe to the family that starts their vacation entering Main Street and looking at a map wondering what to do.

I was this family on my first trip. I've got the moment on video: us in the rain with our $1 ponchos looking at a map. In fact, we had planned the trip fairly well with the aid of the Unofficial Guide, but there's a big difference between reading about it and actually seeing it in person. Anyway, this board is great for information and getting the most out of the trip. I'd rather know too much than too little.

A friend told me about this site. She said, "Just go there and read and read & read" So I did. Then I joined, cause I have to talk and ask questions. And reply. and ask more questions! ;)

This will be our first trip. My hubby may or may not go, who knows. It may be me and the kids. So I need to know what's the best place for them and for me. Where to eat, what to see and do. And I'll be cool in their eyes, cause they don't know we are going. And hopefully won't find out until we get off the plane or on site! :dance3:

I am so glad I found here. It will really help me know what I am doing. And also, take the reviews with a grain of salt. What I eat and like, may be nothing that you do. My DS I know is not like anyone elses as he is bi-polar. I got a lot of support on taking him and doing the world.

Have fun! :cool1:

I like this board for the tips it offers. Even though this is my 9th trip, I still learn fun little things by reading this board.

That being said, I do think some people might create unrealistic itineraries for their vacation. There's just so much to do and see in WDW...and of course, we want to see and do it all, that its hard to narrow it down. We are commando park hoppers, but I read some people's touring plans and they make even me exhausted. I'll never understand how some people can have ADR's for each meal...at different locations...for like 10 days. Whew....I'm in awe of their energy.

Love the Dis Board. :thumbsup2

It diesn't ruin the magic for me in the least. In fact these boards keep me sane until I can get back to WDW. I am a Disney junk and this board is my fix :earboy2:

Coming to these boards got me over my post-vacation blues. Just telling others what restaurants I liked, what rides were like, etc... helped me relive the magic and experience the fun all over again.

I get more excited about my next trip then I would without the boards!!! :sunny:

These boards are the only place where I can "talk" and be part of discussions about Disney without driving everyone around me crazy. When my family members' eyes glaze over, I can come here for my daily Disney fix!

I must heartily agree with you..........
musing over these boards with my coffee is jsut the way i like it....... :surfweb:
70 days to go :hourglass

I have 78 days to go! Tonight at dinner after listening to me obsess about whether or not I chose the right moderate, my DH asked me if I thought I should be concentrating on things that are closer. He really is wonderful, but I guess an addict (even a Disney one) does get boring after a while! I don't know what I would do without the DIS boards. There is no such thing as too much of the DIS! Spoil the magic? This is magic!

Since I have been to WDW before, and my next trip isn't until Sept, I mainly read the budget board and watch the transportation board right now. I will hook back up big time to the dining and tips board in early September. But I don't want to suffer from an overload of disneymania this soon! ;)

My first trip to DW will be on July 1. I am so thankful that I found these boards. I never would have done ADR's. My DH is worried that I won't have a good time because I have done all of this planning, but I don't think I have done too much. Just picked a park each day, scheduled lunches as our sit down meal for the day and actually have not made plans for after lunch.

My DBIL,DMIL, and DSD will be joining us from NC, so I don't really have a lot of input from them. So I am leaving the evenings open so we can figure out what we want to do, probably EMH's.

I realized I actually have two days where I don't have an ADR, and I am starting to freak out about that.

Maybe I can reply after my trip to say if I overplanned or underplanned due to these boards, or got it just right! :cool1:

These boards have been an immense help in trip planning this trip, where we have longer than we've ever had in the parks and would have been at a bit of a loss for where to go and where to avoid for ADR's. It's also given us HUGE tips on the little things to look out for (waking up Tink, the candy lady at Japan) that we didn't know were there or happening. I'm also a "how does it work" FANATIC and reading all the links and posts on the behind the scenes and up-and-coming attractions is a major fix for me. I've learned my lesson and try (sometimes unsuccessfully) to avoid the gripe threads and don't worry too much about touring plans since we're always there at very slow times of year and the line rules are often a little different for us anyway with a disabled family member (a short line may be long for us to wait to load, or we may skip a line, it ballances out). But i can't do without my daily fix! :D

I have gone on many trips to WDW without knowing about DISBOARDS and even before it was developed.... But since discovering the web site, I have been checking it sometimes daily.... I enjoy reading and posting on this site.... I get more excieted about upcoming trips.... But even before the web site... I would buy all Disney Travel guides and read them to keep the charge going!!!
