Hey there...just wondering how it would work - me and my two boys (ages 4 & 6) to go to Cafe orleans and share the pommes frites and a monte cristo...are they going to charge us for this? I can eat barely 1/4 of one (if that), and the boys could finish off the rest of it, plus pommes frites...it's probably more food than all three of us need...any thoughts?? Will they charge a split plate fee for this? Or can I just ask for a couple small plates and divide it up myself?

Thanks,
~Annie

We actually did that, but I cannot remember whether or not they charged a fee. For some reason, I think they are supposed to.

My friend and I did the exact same thing. I ordered the Monte Cristo and she ordered the fries, then we just shared when it came. We were not charged the split fee because we each ordered something off the menu. In your case, I would tell the waiter that you are ordering the Monte Cristo and the boys are ordering the fries. You should be fine but I would nicely verify with the waiter that you will not be charged a split fee. :thumbsup2

We went there in....oh man, can't remember now but we went there and did this exact thing. Actually we ordered the Pomme Frites for all 4 of us to share and then DBF ordered a bowl of gumbo and I ordered the MC, I specifially asked the waiter and he told me if we were sharing he would charge the fee. I thought that was uncool because unlike eating at BB you don't get extra sides when you eat at CO, there aren't any sides offered there. I mentioned that and he just gave me "the look". So, we ordered and we still shared but we thought that was totally uncool, we each ordered something plus the Pomme Frites so we didn't feel it should have been considered a shared plate. I'm sure other servers are different, but just an fyi for you.

I'm with Disneyluvr2: My hubby ordered the monte cristo and I ordered the pommes frit...um, the fries, and I asked the waitress if she could possibly bring another plate out, and she said she'd split the sandwich and not to worry about it. I wondered if she'd charge us (as there IS a split-plate charge mentioned on the menu--$4), but when the check came there was no charge. So we left a big tip. :) Like Pixiewings said, it probably varies by server.

P.S. Between the two of us, we didn't finish even half of the food. Might have, but the fries were old and cold, even though we were like the second party in the restaurant that morning, and the sandwich was the RICHEST thing I've ever tried to eat. I know what you mean about only eating a fourth of it.

hm If I ordered a monte cristo and dfi ordered the fries and we didnt have them sent split up on seprate plates and I was charged the split fee, I think I would have a problem with that. I mean its only 4 bucks but still, the fee is for when they actually split the stuff on the plates by the chef in the kitchen. I wouldn't want to be charged if I did it myself. And whats up with the "look" from the waiter? bummer.

I could be wrong but I think the splitting fee is to make up for the fact that the server probably won't be getting as large a tip as if all the diners had separate meals, in case the person paying doesn't tip extra.

I'm in the situation where my oldest is 10 and is not longer considered a "child" in the eyes of Disney even with meals. She will not eat enough food off an adult meal to make it worthwhile. I had asked if she and her sister could split an adult entree, and at the BB, they said they would have to charge the split plate fee. Or if she ordered a child's meal they would charge double the price. At CC, I basically talked them into letting her order off the kids menu - and they beguilingly let her without any extra charges. Most other places, they just gave her a kids menu after they saw her. I'm guessing other posters are right when they say it depends on who you get. Good luck!

My daughter and I recently split a Monte Cristo at Cafe Orleans and were not charged a split plate fee. I told the waiter were would be sharing and asked for an extra plate - no problem. At Blue Bayou, we shared a meal and were charged a fee. However, Our meal was split for us with extra sides so I thought it was worth it. Neither one of us has a huge appetite and sharing saves us money.

Ya I was a lot put off by the look he gave me, it clearly indicated he thought I was trying to break a rule of some kind, but I thought since we all ordered something and NO sides are offered at CO it wouldn't be a problem. We ordered 4 meals, a bowl of soup, the MC and the Pomme Frites. But nope, he wasn't going for it.
