Split stay when turning 3

A split stay counts as two resort stays. You have to check out and check back in. Your stay clock resets.

If someone was staying off-site, their 2-year old turning 3 would be free the whole trip right? Do you need a (single) Disney hotel reservation to leverage the "free" 3rd birthday trip?

Not trying to stir the pot, and it sounds like Disney considers it two stays, but wouldn't this be a disincentive for people to potentially upgrade resorts mid-trip? (But if you are at a Disney resort and register her as 2 at the first resort and she is 3 when you check into the second it would be fairly obvious that she was now a "kid" and should have a ticket)

Our DD will be a recent 2-year old when we go, so our split stay isn't affected by the age issue this trip, but it it was an issue for a future trip, I would make sure to just pick one resort and stay there or stay offsite to avoid the issue. Or you could just buy her a ticket....

Yes, you need a single reservation to take advantage of one child being 2 at the start of the trip.

I agree, it is kind of a pain, and it is too bad Disney doesn't recognize continuing reservations. But unfortunately they don't.

By reading posts on the Dis people could wildy overestimate the number of 'split stays' that are going on.

The, (extremely), vast number of resort reservations are NOT split stays.

Though it is common on these boards, it is not common with most folks.

I know I've seen this before but can't seem to put my finger on it. We are headed to WDW in Feb and will be arriving the day before my daughter turns 3. I know she is usually considered 3 for the whole trip and therefore free but if we switch resorts after she turns 3 does this reset the clock so she wouldn't be free? Won't o it if that is the case.

I had several long conversations with CMs about this when we were planning our split stay visit for DD's 3rd birthday. The consistent answer was this.

The park tickets are attached to your KTTW Card. You could book tickets for the length of stay attached to your first hotel visit and these tickets would be good for both stays for the adults, you would just have to carry two KTTW Cards for the 2nd half, the first will be your tickets and the second would be room/charge key for 2nd stay.

However, since the first KTTW card for your daughter basically let's her into the park for free as a two year old and allows you to get fast passes, that ticket will expire at midnight on the checkout day and not carry over to the 2nd stay like the adult tickets do. Therefore, she will need an active ticket for the 2nd half of the stay unless you move prior to her birthday.
