Before I call Disney and make a fool outta myself I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row here.

Right now we're booked 8/20-8/25 in 2 standard rooms at Pop with Free Dining. One of those room I'm going to upgrade to Deluxe Dining.

I need to call them to add 2 pre-stay nights (2 rooms for 8/18-8/20), ideally also at Pop (probably w/o a discount). One of those room we'll pay for Deluxe Dining (no dining for the other room). I need this to be a ticketless package, is that the right word? We'll have our tickets from the free dining days that we can activate in advance, correct?

In a perfect world we'd get adjoining rooms for the whole 7 nights, but realistically I know that's a long shot. I also want to make sure I get the right people booked in the right room. If we get adjoining (or adjacent) rooms then in reality dh & I will stay in one room and the boys (17 & 7) will stay next door, but that's not how they're being booked, they'll be booked with an adult on each room of course. I think I want it so that dh is on the room with the child, which will be the Deluxe Dining room (for all days), that means he'll use his magicband to pay for table service meals. I'll be on the other room w/ the 17yo and I'll use my magicband to pay for CS meals, plus the teen can get CS food when he wants (there may be times he sleeps in at the resort or whatever teens do). Of course if we don't have adjoining rooms getting in and out of the room where we're sleeping will be tricky.

Does this make sense? Am I going to confuse the heck out of the CM on the phone? Is it even possible or would I have better luck flying like Tinkerbell?

The right word is ticketless package. In terms of the activation, you need to understand that your package tickets must be activated in person when you arrive. You will not be able to book FP+ at 60 days on those tickets for the stay-in-front-of-stay, because they are not considered "live" until the package they belong to starts, or you activate them on-site. Once activated, you'll be able to book the additional 2? days of FP+ once the tickets are activated, so, basically, same-day and 24-hours in advance for those bookings.

You actually, I think, want connecting rooms. Adjoining can be next door or across the hall, but don't have an interior door between.

You'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about telling them who is sleeping where. Tell them you need two rooms and one of them will be a ticketless package. My guess is they will make the entire reservation a package reservation just to simplify things, but they may not. At this point, they will probably ask you who will be in the ticketless package room and set up that one first. That's the one with DH and youngest son. Then do the other one as just a room with no dining and make sure they make a note that you want connecting rooms, if possible.
