Split Stay ticket ?

Against my better judgement, I am considering a split stay for our next WDW trip. DD has fallen in love with the new Art of Animation resort, and DH has had his heart set on the Contemporary for a while, so I don't see any other way to make everyone happy.

Here is the problem. It's obviously cheaper to buy an 8 day ticket than two 4-day tickets, but we will need the Dining plan for the whole time. (Dh won't consider a trip w/o it) so we will need at least a 1-day ticket on the second reservation.

I was thinking about doing an 8-day ticket on the first ressie, assuming I can use those days the whole time we are there even at the second resort, right? Then just a 1-day ticket on the second ressie to qualify us for the DDP. We won't need to use that 1-day ticket though, so would it basically be a non-expiring ticket that we could use another year? I was thinking that the multi-day tickets didn't start their usage window until the first time they went through a turnstile, but I'm not sure how this works if you just have a 1-day ticket on a package. Does anyone know what the rule is on this? Will that one-day ticket expire in 14 days or will it still be good in years to come?

If we do it that way, it will unfortunately mean having to deal with two cards for the second part of our trip, since the park tickets will be on a different card than our room key and meals, so if we aren't going to be able to use that 1-day ticket later I might just do two 4-day tickets even though it costs more to save the hassle.

If the one day ticket hasn't been used, you can use it almost anytime. It may expire, but probably not for years.

if you do the split and plan on holding onto the 1 day ticket on the 2nd card for future usage, I suggest you put a rubber band around the 1-day ticket cards to remind you not to use them in the turnstyles! You'll have to take the rubber band off to use the card for dining plan and room access, but just put the rubber band back on immediately after use to avoid accidental ticket use.:thumbsup2

You might even ask them to put it on the "paper/tyvek" media instead of the KTTW media (plastic card). Then you can write on it - one day ticket.

I think at the second hotel you can have your tickets transferred to your KTTW card so you don't have one card for tickets and another card for dining/room. Then you'll just have separate one day tickets you can put in your suitcase or something to keep them out of the way. I think they can do it at the resort but you may have to go to guest services.

I had wondered if they could transfer our remaining days to the card at the second hotel, but then how would we be sure that the one-day ticket didn't get used, if it was on the same card as our remaining days from the first ticket? As far as I know there isn't any way to tell the ticket machines what to deduct the day from. I wonder if they could/would also transfer the one-day ticket to a separate card?

I'm starting to think it might just be too much trouble - DH is very fond of the one-card-does-it-all thing, and I see him getting grumpy and complaining every time we have to juggle the cards or worry about what's getting used where...have to decide if a few hundred dollars saved is worth the stress!
