Split stay question

I'd like to go in January and spend our last 2 nights at YC/BC. However, I wouldn't want to switch resorts if the weather ends up being too cold for swimming (we wouldn't go to the parks those days).

What happens if I book 2 resorts and then only want to stay at the 1st one? Do I lose a deposit or have to pay a fee? Should I only book the one resort and then hope to get into YC/BC if the weather is good? There is no way that we can do an entire week at YC/BC, so that isn't an option. Not that I'd ever pay it anyway if I was going to be at the parks all day!

having been there in january myself i will be the first to tell you that since you are from upstate NY (spend my summers upstate every year since i was a child!) it SHOULD be warm enough for you to go in the pool in january. BUT, there is no guarantee. i've heard some people say that it was in the 50's in january! we didn't experience that though. i don't know what disney's policy is about refunding your deposit, but you would also have to hope that they can accomodate you at the 1st resort. i don't think i would base my decision to switch resorts on a pool alone. january is to "iffy" for that. i think if you plan to switch resorts you should just do it, regardless of the weather! it would still be fun, even if it was only warm enough for a quick swim in the pool. you can still go in the hot tub, and you can enjoy the whole epcot/boardwalk area.

I'm from way, way upstate myself, and when it's been -20 here, and even 50 there, I've been only too happy to swim! (I've been in January twice now, once was chilly, once wasn't). You'll likely be fine, I would guess.

Our first trip was in January and it was during a very cold spell, they had frost that ruined many plants! I'm just concerned that if I wanted to change my ressies once I was there that there would be a penalty. I think I need to re-post and phrase the question differently. But thanks for the help!
