Split stay but at same resort

In order to take advantage of the free dining promo, I had to book a 2 night room only reservation then an 8 night package deal - both at POP Century. Do you think we will just be able to keep the same rooms (we have 3 rooms booked)? Also, do we have to actually go to the front desk to check out then check back in?
We've never done a split stay before so I'm very interested in everyone's knowledge.

If both reservations are for the exact same room category at Pop you can ask that they be marked as continuing reservations. When you arrive let the front desk castmember know that you have a continuing reservation. They will do their best to keep you in the same room, but there is no guarantee. Usually you will have to go to the front desk and check out/in again.

I have been very lucky and have never had to change rooms for a split stay at the same resort in the same room category. I have it noted on each reservation that it's a continuing stay. I've always had to go to the front desk to check out of the first reservation and check into the second reservation.

I wonder what percentage have to change rooms? We may have to do this also.

We've done this a couple times, but it's still a little anxiety provoking for a planner like me because there is no guaranty right up until the day of the continuing reservation...

That said, we've stayed in the same room both times :) We have had to visit the front desk to check in to the same room and there has been no loss in the room access either (another fear- getting locked out of my own room :)). We just made sure to check in before the scheduled check out time of the first reservation to ensure the keys stay active.

It's in everyone's best interest to keep you in the same room, so they really do try hard to accommodate as long as you are in the same room category for both.

I assume you take all your items with you when you check out/check in in case you don't get to keep your room right?

We do this often because I'm forever adding on to trips.

The most recent one, at BWI, I didn't even have to go to the desk on the day it switched.
At about 6:30 AM I got a text that told me my room wasn't quite ready. Then at 6:31 AM I got a text giving me my room number, which was my same room I was in.
Other times I have stopped by the front desk to be sure things were in line for the reservation to continue.

We never have. I usually head to the front desk around 6:30AM to check out and check in. The 2 times we've had to switch rooms we pack up and move when I get back to the room since we don't have to vacate the room until 11:00AM.

We had a similar experience at BWI last November. After we got settled in our room I simply went down to the front desk and asked if we were going to be able to keep the same room. They confirmed that we were. I asked if I had to come down in the morning and check-out and check back in. They said no need to do so. The next morning I got the receipt for the first day (which had been the day I added on to the original reservation).
We just went about our business and had no problems with the magic bands opening the doors or anything. It was a room only reservation so we had no dining credits to worry about.

I honestly don't recall if I got another text for the room for the remaining days.

Anyone have experience doing this but not in the same room category? We are also taking advantage of the free dining. I got 9 nights in the middle of our vacation but need to add different room categories for both the first and last days because that is all that's available.

To Disney, a split stay is separate reservations, even if they are in the same resort.

You will have to let them know when you check in that you want to keep the same room. They'll try, but not guaranteed.

It might be harder regarding rooms in different categories, especially if you are moving from a higher room category to a lower room category. All you can do is ask.

I'll have one coming up this week. We arrive on Thursday night for 1 night in a standard room at POR. Then we have 4 nights in a King. I don't expect to get the same room but I did note that we have a continuing reservation just because.

If you do have to move, you can pack up and call for luggage assistance to come pick up your stuff. They will store it for you while you are enjoying the parks. We have done this twice and our luggage was actually in our new room when we got back from the park, we didn't even have to call. Also, we didn't need to be in the room when they came to the original room to pick up the luggage either.

I had this recently because the discount I wanted wasn't available for all the nights I wanted to stay, so I had to book the one night I couldn't get the discount separately. I booked the same room category for all nights, and just asked when I got to the front desk if they could keep me in the same room. They were great and made sure I would be able to stay in the same room the entire time. Due to the fact the last night was the extra night I did need to go back to the front desk to check out/in. It only took a moment and I left everything in the room as they had already marked my account with all of the information. Have a great time!

I used to work in hotels and this is the absolute truth. Rooms changes are a hassle for everyone. Plus, it actually costs a hotel money to switch rooms because "check-out" rooms usually take longer to clean than a "stay-over" room. Granted, it's not a ton of money. Still, when operate over 25,000 rooms, all that extra labor time will start to add up.

Great point.
Also stresses the importance of letting Disney know in advance that you have more than 1 reservation in the category. That way they can work on getting you the same room when the initial assignments are done (if possible). If they don't know till you arrive it may be more complicated since the room you are in could have already been assigned and that means moving someone, which creates a domino affect.
