Split home resorts....how does it help?

I am in consideration of DVC, not able to take the plunge yet.
Here was my iniatial plan.
Buy between 160-200 points so that we can stay 8 days during dream season(would require approx 304-354 pts per stay every other year depending on our choice resort) a 1 bdrm.
My kids would love AKV because of the animals, but we also would like to stay at the epcot resorts.
If we split the home resorts to say 100 pts each.
Can I book 11 m out at either hotel because I can transfer points from one contract to the other and do a combo of bank and borrow?
Someone once quoted me that you can only book 7 months out for either location, because you don't have enough points for a stay anywhere for that long of a stay.
That seems to defunk the reasoning behind buying multiple resorts.
Am I correct in this thinking?
I hope this question makes sense.
thanks in advance

I am looking at splitting between BLT and AKV as I want to be able to guarantee a booking at both of these at 11 months out. I only want a few nights at BLT and the rest at AKV, so I am getting most of my points at AKV. You are right in saying that you can only use (for example) your BLT at BLT 11 months out, at 7 months you can use them anywhere. I won't be able to use any of my BLT points to book AKV until 7 months.

I intend to go every 18 months and use 1 & 1/2 years points for each resort at a time (by banking some one year, and borrowing them on the other).

I hope my reply makes sense!!:lmao:

That is what I was hoping to get clarification on.

You have it right. You can not combine points from different home resorts until 7 months--that would defeat the whole purpose of having a home resort as everyone would just buy a few points at each resort so they could book them all at 11 months.

So, if you own 200 points (100 AKV and 100 BCV), you can use bank and use 200 at 11 months at AKV, and 200 at BCV at 11 months. And, then at 7 months, you can call back and change the split stay if there is availability.

Good luck!!

Be careful if you are making your buying decision based on a certain number of points in Dream Season for a specific unit type and resort. We all know (Members that is) that these point allocations can, and will, change over time. If you buy based on specific criteria, you may find yourself one day unable to book your desired vacation due to insufficient points.

That I know. I look at the time of year and do an average for an every other year stay. I think we will ultimatly end up with 200 points and then we will have sufficent points to do what we need.
that would allow us to have enough to borrow some, skip a year, bank and borrow the next.
If we decide it is not enough I understand from so many on the DIS that add-on-itis is very strong!
But you have to start somewhere!
thanks for the input!

if you are buying from disney, you won't be able to buy your first contract for 100 points, you'll have to buy a bigger contract at the first place (I think 160 is the minimum now), and then you can add on a smaller contract.

If you are buying them resale, look at how the points are borrowed and banked already and try to think ahead of how that will impact your plans for borrowing, if that makes sense. Basically, I think you want to bank all of one place in year 1 and borrow from the other, so that you have 200 points in year 1 for place 1, and 200 points in year 2 for place 2, if that makes sense. If you are buying resale then the points may already be banked and borrowed so think about it and try to project that out.

FWIW, we own at bcv, wlv and added on at akv and bcv, and it works out fine for us.

Recently, Disney has been allowing new members, who purchase at least the 160 minimum, to split those contracts into two, or even between two home resorts, ie: BLT and AKV, as long as one is 100 points.

To answer your question about transferring:

Currently (and this is one of the rules Disney can change--and has changed in the 3 years I've owned), members are limited to one transfer, in or out, per use year...so you couldn't transfer points out of one contract you own into another contract you own (that would be two transfers)...plus, points (are supposed to) retain their "home characteristics"...so if you transferred BLT points from another owner, for example, to your AKV contract, Disney would still track those transferred points as BLT points...so you'd still have to use them w/the AKV points at 7 months (or later)...

So, for your plans, I don't think transferring between your contracts makes a lot of sense...

Good luck with your planning and purchasing decisions...

I can see why someone would want to trf points to someone else - but why would you want to trf your own points to another one of your own contracts??:confused3

Sorry, just wondered if this was something else that I should be undertanding and don't!!:lmao:

If you are an owner with more than 1 Master Contract you would have to transfer points from one contract into another in order to combine the points for a reservation because having more than 1 MC is treated as separate contracts. A transfer is not necessary if you have 1 Master Contract & your additional contracts are noted as Add-Ons to that Master ( to be noted as Add-Ons those additional contracts purchased must have same Use Year as Master AND they must be titled exactly same as Master ).

Hope this helped :goodvibes

Thanks for replying!!:thumbsup2

I am just waiting for papers to come through to buy into DVC for the first time. I am buying 110 points at AKL and 65 points at BLT - would this be two contracts(they will both by Dec UY and they asked both my name & DH's, so I guess they must be in joint names- but both the same)?? (I have split the points as I want to do split stays, but I was planning to use odd points from each place to buy extra nights at 7 months. Am I gonna be able to do this??):confused3

Sorry just trying to get my head around it all at the moment!!:thumbsup2

I believe transfers are done between two Memberships. If a membership has two contracts under it, there is no need to transfer between these two contracts. At 7 mths, MS will simply take the points from the contracts you want without transfers.

However, if you have two memberships and you want to transfer points from one membership to another and they are both yours, you can still do it since the transfer policy of one is done PER membership and not per contract. So if you want to transfer points from one membership to another, then you would receive the limit for transfer for each.

We have two memberships and we can transfer points from one to another once a year. The membership that transfers TO will be one transfer for that membership and the membership that RECEIVES the transfer will also have one transfer for that membership. This would be the limit each year.

Hope this makes sense.:)

I know you don't know for definite - but do you think it sounds like I will have one membership and then two contracts within that membership??:confused3 (therefore not needing to worry about this!:lmao:)

Will I be able to tell which I have when I get the contracts for signing??:confused3

Sorry to be such a pain!!:lmao:

One contract should be listed as Master Contract and other contract as an Add-On to it. If you're purchasing these directly through Disney that's how they'll set it up but it doesn't hurt to ask your guide to confirm this to you.

Yes, if you have points from one resort you'd like to use at other at 7 months MS will be able to do that ( doing this doesn't use up your 1 transfer per year option because 1 contract is MC and other is Add-On - they are not 2 separate memberships, so you would still be able to transfer points from another DVC member in event you needed additional points beyond what you own ).

Good luck & hope your purchase goes smoothly :thumbsup2

Yes, they would be two different contracts. And if you are purchasing it directly from Disney, I would assume it is one membership since they both have the same UY. And if you want to add on, they would add contracts to your existing membership (assuming your UY is still available).

At 7 mths, you can use points from each contract however you want (keeping in mind the rules for banking and borrowing as well as transfers) since it is no longer at the Home Resort Priority.

As an aside, you can have two memberships if you want two different UYs. This may be beneficial if you tend to book certain reservations at certain time and you are timing it based on giving you the most options if you need to cancel. But, although we have two memberships, I would not advise doing so since times change and you may not vacation at the same time and having two different UYs would not be helpful. We have two memberships because we purchase one through resale, we are very fond of one resort and we joined after it was fully sold. So we had no choice. I find it takes more work to coordinate two memberships.

thank you both for your replies! I feel reassured now, but will double check that I have one master contract with an add on, as that is certainly what I was expecting to have!!:goodvibes

thanks again:thumbsup2

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm assuming since you have the same UY for both contracts and also (assuming) that you purchased it through DVC, it sounds like you have ONE membership with two contracts under it. Unless they specifically told you that you will have two memberships, you will only be given one.

As I mentioned on my previous post, I think you would HAVE to request to get two different UYs which will give you two different memberships. Now, there are valid reasons for this and I have heard of people purposefully getting two memberships, but it really is more trouble if you are trying to coordinate both memberships for the same trip.

Good Luck.
