Was reading the other thread on when everyone's kids get out of school. Ours is June 21. Originally scheduled for the 15th but then we had snow days.

My question is.....how many week long breaks do your schools have? I think this has a lot to do with what date they get out of school. We have a week long break for Christmas, another one during Feb (winter break, which I think is useless) and then another full week in April (spring break) On top of all this, they have the typical day off holidays (presidents day, columbus day, memorial day, etc) Along with all of that, there are a TON of teacher workshops and such, plus days off for parent/teacher conferences.

I think if we cut out the Feb winter break, we'd be able to get out of school alot sooner (well, actually a week....but come summertime, sitting in school for a week seems like a lifetime!!!)

We just got our school schedule for next year and we're scheduled to get out on June 21 and that's not even snow days. AARRGGHHH.

so what kind of vacations/school breaks do you have?

Do you go back really late?

Here in Florida, our summer vacation is end of May through the beginning of August. 3 days-a week for thanksgiving, 2 weeks at christmas, a week for spring break. Then the other holidays.

I went to high school in Colorado, and we had an awesome schedule. We started early august, went for 9 weeks, 2 weeks off, 9 weeks, 2 weeks off, so forth, until end of May. I Loved it! I wish all schools did this, since I am now a teacher!

My DDs get out May 25th. However, they start back on August 12th which is very early. This year we had to make up many days due to Hurrcane Katrina. I think that they may have built more hurricane days in for the coming year. Traditionally, we have a week at Thanksgiving due to the holiday & teacher's convention at begnnng of week. We usally have a little over at week at Christmas, week at Mardi Gras, & week at Easter. This was all reduced to a couple days per holiday this year due to hurricane make up days.

In Chicago they get one week in April and 2 weeks between Christmas and New Years. This past year the break started Dec 23rd and they went back Jan 9th. They only get off Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.

Yeah, I guess we do go back kinda late. We usually start the last Wed of August (which will be Aug 30) We are in NE Connecticut. Last year we had a new high school built and had to be out of the old one by a certain date, so the eliminated the Feb winter break and we were scheduled to get out June 8th. :cool1: But then with snow days it got moved up to June 16th (I didn't work that day though, cause I was on a plane to WDW) But it was nice not to have a Feb break and get out a bit earlier. I wish they would do that every year.

I talked to my sister who lives in the Poconos and she said that they started school the last week in August and got out May 31 of last year. :confused3 They just don't have all these darn school vacations. Instead of a full week, they might just get an extended 3-4 day weekend. Plus I had talked to her during a holiday weekend and she said the kids were in school making up a snow day. Now there's a great idea. If we have snow days to make up, why don't they take a few days throughout the year and make them up then? Can ya tell this grates on my nerves. :)

Oh well, whattya gonna do?

My kids get out June 15. They have one week off at Christmas and one week off after Easter. I wish they had a week off at another time of year; it would make planning trips easier! They start back Sept. 6.

Today is the last day of school here. They go back on Aug 7. We have a week for Spring break (combined with the Easter holiday), 2 weeks at Christmas, usually 3 days for Mardi Gras (1 day this year), usually 3 days at Thanksgiving (1 week for this coming year due to built in hurricane make up days), etc. Our state has a law that school must be 180 days total. Some school districts take different holidays here and there, but, in the end, it must all be 180 days.

In NYC (public school) our last day is June 28. The first day of school is after Labor Day.

During the year we have 2 days off for Thanksgiving, 5 days for Christmas, 5 days mid winter break, 7 days spring break.

We're also out for Martin Luther Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Election Day, Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah,Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, and Brooklyn/Queens Day.

Our school year ends late, but I love our schedule.

My son and I lived in NC for 9 years. I also felt there was something "wrong" about going to school in August. :sad2: :lmao:

With NYC's school schedule, it's very hard for me to justify pulling my son out for vacation. Our breaks cover all travel seasons. :cheer2:

We have 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week for Spring Break. But, we go back to school on August 17. That's why we get out on May 25.

In NJ what I remember is the week at Christmas, we don't get a Feb. break- they get 2 days off, the only other week long one was at Easter. We go back the Wednesday after Labor day. Our last day of school is June 15. I think there are 171 days in our school year? Oh my I just looked at the calendar and they only have 2 more full weeks= the rest are full of half days and days off..... YIKES!! I am not ready for summer yet!
I am lol because I am saying "we" like I go to school.... feels like it but I don't :rotfl2:

My kids start school in early August (Aug 3rd for next school year). Then they have off a week in October for fall break. Then they get 2 weeks at Christmas. Then another week in March for spring break. Of course, holidays are extra. Our last school day is usually scheduled for around May 26th. However, this year, we didn't use any of the built-in snow days, so today is DD's last day.

Hi,
I am in GA...east of Atlanta. All of the counties here vary somewhat and the county I live in has close to a year round schedule. We get out next Fri., May 26.
We will be starting back Aug. 1 we have 1 week at the end of Oct. 1 week for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks for Christmas, and 2 weeks for Spring Break (last week of March and the first week of April). School will get out the last week of May. I like the breaks...and the kids do also. But summer is sssoooo short and the heat is pretty intense in August. I personally think it is too hot for school in Aug. here in the deep south. We also go 180 days.

Last year our Oct. break was early and we went to WDW for 10 days with free dining :thumbsup2 (kids missed 2 early release days of school) this year the break is much later in the month so we are pulling them out for a week in mid Sept. (could not pass up the free dining) My kiddos do not know that though ...it is a surprise!!! :rotfl2:

Around here, the public schools go something like this:

They get one or two days off for basic holidays: Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Martin Luther (sorry I'm just waking up) King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, and Thanksgiving (I think that's it)
They get a week to 2 weeks off for Christmas depending on what day of the week Christmas falls on.
Some schools get a week off in Februrary and a week off for Easter
Others get two weeks off for Easter
And the high school in my city (I don't know about all the other high schools in the area) get Regents weeks off (they only go in if they have a test) which one is in January and the other is in June.
