Spin-Off: What's So Wrong With Zombie Threads??

I just read another disparaging comment about a first time poster bumping an old thread.

#1: Lots of people actually FIND the DIS for the first time by googling a topic and having threads show up in the search results. There's nothing necessarily nefarious about a newbie registering to take part in a discussion that's of interest to them.
#2: Often the discussion will "take off again" as people are obviously still interested in the topic - even older, more current-event type ones.

Does this bother you and if so, why?

People could talk about what they wanna talk about, but a side note, I was talking to a girl at work and she said this " I hate all these Vampire Shows, but like Zombie programs because they are real "

It doesn't bother me. It actually gives me an opportunity to see some older threads that I haven't read and they are sometimes interesting.

It can be problematic when people start asking questions of the previous posters on the thread when those people may not even be around anymore. And sometimes the info on the thread could be outdated (although that wasn't the case in the most recent zombie thread resurrection).

:rotfl2: You all must live in a rough neighbourhood!

Bugs me when a thread's bumped when the OP is asking about something to do about a certain situation. You respond, thinking you're helping them. Then you find out the OP was from 5 years before -- that movie, meal, etc. was long since decided on and forgotten.

I guess I can see that concern, but when it is a topic that routinely cycles through these boards every 6 months*, I don't see why it matters if it is a zombie threat, and a newly created one, it is a topic that is still of interest.

*Things like:
Can I take alcohol on the cruises.
Should I take my kid out of school for a vacation.
Best place to get a foo foo coffee.
Should I tip a (fill in the name of any tradesperson)

Can I take alcohol on the cruises. Maybe.
Should I take my kid out of school for a vacation. Maybe.
Best place to get a foo foo coffee. Starbucks.
Should I tip a (fill in the name of any tradesperson) No. They are providing a service for the price agreed to by contract.

There. Maybe that will put those "zombies" out of their misery once and for all! :rotfl:

Well, other than the Starbucks comment. :lmao:

Now, if you can get the whole Common Core thing straightened out.................

I think it's because when some first time posters do this, they bump up the thread with a controversial story that doesn't seem plausible and then never come back.

;) Sure. If you'll kindly "Cliff's Notes" me on what Common Core is, I'll be happy to give it a go... [DELETED: I was just joking around, not trying to start something - sorry.]

What's wrong with them? Nothing.

I hate seeing a new member chastised for bringing back an old thread, really makes them feel welcome here. :(

I have answered a zombie thread question, and sometimes feel a little foolish if it's like 5 years old or something and I didn't notice it...but then others chime in too, and sometimes it gets the thread going again, and there's no harm in that.

I don't understand why someone feels they have to comment about the thread being a zombie thread. If they see it's old and don't want to participate in renewing it then just close the thread and move on.

As far as I can tell, the prevailing thought is nobody helped me so why should I help anybody. As Canadians, it's a foreign thought to us.

Isn't that on you though, for not noticing the date? I always look at the date of posts to see if it is super outdated. :confused3

I totally agree with you and I also think that it "bugs" people because they get to feeling a little embarrassed if they don't notice the date, but I don't think they need to feel that way. Especially if others would stop chiming in to try to make them feel stupid for posting in the threads.

Please don't. I was just kibbitzing, not trying to open up another opportunity for you to assert how superior we are.

This is what happened with the most recent one. Brand new poster bumping a thread with an obviously questionable (and most likely incorrect) story. THAT is when bumping a zombie thread is an issue. Sorry, but it is pretty obvious when it is a "mistake" versus someone who is trying is randomly picking a topic to try and get a rise out of people.

See on other forums I am on, starting a new thread on a subject that already exists will get your thread locked and a stern warning from the mods about starting threads on something that already exists and the use of search before posting. Yeah on those other forums you can curse and bring up all manner of salty subjects....but if you make a thread about something that already has a thread...ooh you are read the riot act. :rotfl:

Thats why just couple weeks ago I posted on a zombie thread about Comedians in Cars getting Coffee

I thought you were asking a question so I was answering it as simply as I could. I honestly wasn't trying to start something. I have never received points and don't want to start now.

Heh, a few years back I bumped an old thread complaining about 30¢ increase gas prices.

I found it funny because the OP was complaining that gas prices had jumped (way) up to $1.89 per gallon & everyone agreed that was way too expensive. I bumped it because by then gas was averaging $4+ per gallon.

When people responded & then realized that it was an old thread, they were less than thrilled.
