Spent $1000 for lice treatment - I feel sick! UPDATE Day 10: I THINK THEY ARE GONE!

Did the company offer any guarantees? I would have thought for that amount$$ that would include return visits if there are more bugs/nits found. Good luck!

No, no guarantees. The same company sells lice insurance. They are a pretty big operation and work with schools, camps, etc.

I don't want to say the name of the company because I'm not quite sure how I feel about the service just yet. I have to wait until I have done the full follow up treatment.

OMG, this sounds awful. I just found this thread and I have to confess I'm itching head to toe just reading it!!

Lice is one of my biggest fears. We haven't gotten it yet - knock on wood. I have 2 girls - 7 and 4 - with long hair. And my oldest sleeps with about a hundred stuffed animals. We'd be screwed.

FWIW, I would pay any amount of money in a heartbeat to have someone come do it for me if we ever got it. Unfortunately we're in Alabama currently, and I don't think such places exist. I am ordering some of that fairy tales detangler I think, just to be safe. Ulta carries the whole line for anyone interested.

I got lice in high school. Talk about mortifying. It was over the summer and I was a camp counselor at a sports camp - I was in the pool with the kids a lot so I'm sure that's how I got it. It was awful.

I hope it's almost over for you!

I have spent so much money on this problem already! However, I think I will get this comb. I will order it tomorrow. I wonder if I can pick it up at a store? I have a whole basket of lice products and combs, etc. now that I keep under my bathroom sink.

Outside of the lice place we went to I've never seen it in the stores. I hear you about the $$, but trust me, this is the best comb ever. I threw away all of my others. When my BFF's kids got lice I had one shipped to her overnight from Amazon. Her girls have very long, thick hair and it was worth whatever price I had to pay to get that comb to her.

Haven't read through the whole thread but I have dealt with lice exactly ONCE while it has gone round and round in my kids' classrooms so I consider mine a sucess story.

DD6 had lice (none of the rest of the 6 of us got it and I had slept on the same pillow as her 4 nights in a row before finding the lice!)

Anyhoo, treated DD6 with LiceMD (it is non toxic and worked VERY WELL) as written on package except that instead of combing out nits I CUT off each hair that had a nit on it and sealed them all in a ziplock bag before throwing it out.
I treated everyone else in the family with RID with a quick comb through (after initially not seeing aNy nits on heads).
THEN I vaccuummed the crud out of our house, EVERYTHING got vaccuumed- floor to ceiling and then some. Anything furry or cloth was placed in trash bags in the garage for 72 hours (couch cushions, stuffed animals & dolls, pillows, etc).
All hair ornaments, brushes, combs were tossed out. From that point on everyone had their own assigned hair stuff and ALL of it was kept in seperate ziplock bags in the freezer (this was over 4 months ago and the brushes are still in there- brush your hair in the morning and put it back in the freezer!)

DD6 was only allowed to sit on the leather chair or kitchen chairs for a month NO COUCH, her bedding was collected and washed every morning immediately after she woke up and it all staying in the dryer until just before bedtime. I also vaccummed her matress and all around it every morning after stripping it (did this for 2 weeks). I'd make her bed, she'd go to sleep and as soon as she woke up I'd strip the bed of everything and throw it back into the dryer (once a week doing a full washing & drying).
After all that initial stuff I checked her hair every night for 2 weeks and cut out any nits then treated her hair again on day 7, & day 14 with LiceMD. I did find additional nits, but never any live lice after the first day (she had 25 live lice and over 200 nits that 1st treatment- she thought it was fun to count them all?!)

I keep her hair in braids when she is going to school (or scouts or anywhere that other kids were at) and every Sunday we STILL do a critter check on all the kids just in case.
So while I was doing all of this obsessive critter hunting our neighbors have had it 4 times each kid, GS coleader's kids (who gave it to my kid) has had it 3 times and most of the kids' school has had it at least once.

The common theme is that they treat the kids' heads and don't clean the environment and/or they don't follow up to kill the newly hatched lice. I don't care what anyone says ,there is no meds out there that will kill the nits- you have to physically remove them AND treat the hatched/hatching nits for at least 14 days after the original infestation to get rid of it entirely. The nits have a lifecycle of 7-10 days so if you treat 2 more times at 7 day intervals, after the initial infestation you should be able to kill everything.

I'm sorry you had to pay so much to have someone do the removal for you. It was time consuming but quite honestly I think they took advantage of you in a scary situation.

We started using a shampoo called LiceShield. Seems to work like a charm.
What is the special comb (not Robicomb) that people are talking about ordering from Amazon?

Day 8: Found 3 more nits on dd's head! I am getting frustrated! I couldn't find any yesterday. I'm thinking the ones I'm finding now were too immature to notice - they are white before they are ready to hatch then turn brownish. The brownish ones are easier to spot.

Ugh - I really wanted this to be over!

Your daughter must have blonde hair. Mine has dark brown hair and the white nits were very easy to spot. Unfortunately, her hair is also shiny, and every little bit of shine looked like a nit to me!

Also, I dreamed last night that I had lice. Maybe I need to step away from this thread... :rolleyes1

Are you doing overnight olive oil treatments every night? The company you used really needs to come back out & re comb. I never found anything after they left at all. I wish you would name them since some of us would like to know never to call them.

{{hugs}} Just keep on swimming! You'll get them all eventually .

I have not read the whole thread, so this might have been covered...

Are you checking her head when her hair is wet or dry? My friend's daughter had lice and they had a horrible time getting rid of them. She was checking her hair when it was wet, after her shower. She learned that they were easier to see when her hair was dry. She would check her and find her nit free, and send her to school. The nurse would check her before school, find nits and send her home. Finally the nurse asked if she was checking her hair when wet.

Good luck!

I just bought something else for my lice arsenal: Quit Nits. It's all natural and I can use it on my 2 yr old. I haven't found a nit on her since Saturday night however she is squirmy and will not let me check her!

http://www.amazon.com/Quit-Nits-Complete-Head-Lice/dp/B001IBQOFU

Like I said, I found 3 nits on my 7 yr old and I am not happy. So, I am waiting for my Terminator X comb to come today and I will use the Quit Nits, along with the shampoo and oil the treatment center gave me.

The treatment center owner is very accessible to me by phone and I really like that about this company. When I told her I found 3 nits she assured me that my child had a huge infestation and it's not possible to get rid of them overnight. The small nits can be easily missed and can grow larger and in a few days become more easily combed out, like the three this morning.

If anyone has a lice problem and would like to know this company name, I'd gladly PM them. I just don't want to put them on this message board because I feel like it is too early to judge them. I am not yet an expert on lice. I will be once I have finally gotten rid of them, however!

My DD had a very large infestation as well. I was still able to get rid of them. The Terminator is the comb I used as well. I have gotten rid of the lice in my DD's hair as well as two of her classmates hair as well. Are you sure they are nits and not just dandruff? Do hey "blow off" the hair when you blow on her head? I would definitely have the owner of the other company go thru her hair again, especially after paying that much. Many people have told their stories of how they were able to get rid of them themselves or brought their children to the LiceBusters, or other companies. Where on the hair is the nit? If they are further away, they have probably already hatched. Good luck. Wanted to add, when you comb thru make sure the tip of the comb stays in contact with the scalp.

My dd had lice a couple of years ago. I used the LiceMD on her head. Then I started to do research to see what else I could do. She had a fairly bad case.

I used the LiceMD for a couple of treatments. I then always started to put mousse or gel on her hair and then would blow dry it. After drying it, I would use the straight iron on it. Lice like nice clean hair and love it when the kids just wash and go (let it air dry.) so I had to start putting stuff in her hair like I do. It only took about 1 week to be done with everything on her head and she had various ages of the lice going on!

She also started to wash her hair with the "blue" Dawn dish shop once a week as a preventative.

Haven't seen the little buggers since. Thankfully now she is older and loves to use the flat iron all the time and although it's not the best thing for her head, I know it helps with the prevention of lice!

They are definitely nits. They are brown, oval looking and kind of shiny -- definitely nits.

The owner says any follow up treatment will be charged for.

We had a horrible time with them last year. What finally kicked them for us was a chlorinated swimming pool. I don't know that it necessarily killed them but by swimming daily, it washed away the live ones as they hatched. It saved my nerves as well.

After some thought, I have determined that the place I hired does not necessarily get rid of your lice for you. They get you started on a program which will most likely get rid of the lice. They have no guarantees.

However, since they do come to your home at any hour, even on holidays such as Passover, that is a great service for someone who feels so overwhelmed. I can't discount that.

There are other places like Hair Fairies that do guarantees however they do not make house calls.

Just thinking out loud.

A lot of people have actually caught lice that way too. My DD is a competitive swimmer and it definitely did not get rid of them. Water will not call lice. That is why just taking a shower or a bath and people can still catch them.

The problem is....charging that much they SHOULD have gotten rid of the lice, not just gotten you started. Really, I think you are being too nice to them. Are you still combing nightly? Have you found any other live lice? Not all nits will hatch and some that you see may have already hatched. Where on the hair are the ones you are still finding?

I feel bad for you. I think the owner is giving you the run around. I understand that you're glad they came out when they did. Mine did too. Heck for all I know we used the same company & I just got a better girl. They should be willing to come out for a recheck. At this point you should realize that their service is not acceptable. Just checked the website that I used & they now offer "lice insurance" so I am really, really curious if it's the same place.

I'm not seeing any bugs at all. Not that I know of and I think I would be able to tell if it's a bug, right? I saw a live one on dd7's hair on day 1.

I see little brown nits, only once in a while, on the fine tooth comb. I don't see any when I do a spot check on the scalp.

What does this sound like to you (or anyone who knows a lot about lice!)
