Spelling Issues

do aul bad speleurs of the wurld haf to untie?

bad spelling annoys me sometimes but I don't get all wound up about it.

Errors of any kind in a post...I proof papers for class not for message boards. If I start getting graded, maybe I will reread my posts but until then...

The funny thing to me is that I read the first sentence correctly and only really noticed it when I started reading the second. I have forgotten much I learned about spelling so I cannot judge.

Was that medicine Topomax? It definitely will affect you. The doctor took me off when I told him I was forgetting many things.

If you're going to be critiquing poster's spelling, I think you should double check your grammar and punctuation before you hit submit. ;)

:thumbsup2

See my tag.. ;)

I'm not sitting in a classroom right now - and would really prefer not to be treated as though I am.. I'm chatting - not taking a spelling test..:)

ITA...What really gets me is when someone can't argue with the point so they stoop to attacking spelling/typing errors.

I find it funny when posters correct other posters spelling and grammar. I always thought that they didn't have anything clever to say so they want the non-speller to feel dumb. A Cyber bully is what I call them. They hide comfortably behind a computer screen. :surfweb:

OP, I don't know you and I'm not saying this is you. If the shoe fits wear them - if not - pass them on.

Yup, Topamax would be the one :headache:

I am on it because they discovered I had a minor stroke believed to be caused from migraines. So the migraines need to be prevented to prevent any future strokes. :sad2: So...I'm on 50mg a day right now, but they want me to up to an eventual 100 mg. They promise the side effects will lessen within a few months I hope they are right, otherwise, my students are going to think I'm crazy!

I found out a my ds's (10) IEP that our school district (the largest in the county) does not require spelling lessons/tests in the primary grades. His teacher does them on a irregular basis and doesn't make a big deal about it. Students are graded more on the content of a sentence rather than any spelling issues. My ds has horrible spelling skills and I have to read his work through phonetics.

I have to say that I am quite surprised by some people's misuse of the English language. I don't really find it too often on the DIS though. I find that I can understand what most people are saying and that's the main thing. However, there was one post quite recently that was just terrible.

Every now and then that happens. No capitalization, horrible punctuation, spelling so bad that you had to decipher the words. (I realize that the previous string of words was not a sentence, btw.:)) This person was not really young and English did appear to be their first language. The worst thing about it is they made it clear that they were part of a high income family to boot, which I assume means they are somewhat educated (but you know what they say about assumptions).

So, I do see where you are coming from. Is it a huge problem? Nah. (Not a word. :)) Can it be problematic? Absolutely.

Wow! After reading some of the replies to my OP, I feel like I've been attacked! My OP was simply asking a question about spelling skills declining and what people thought about it. :confused3 Contrary to what I have read from some posters, I do not sit and critique peoples' spelling skills with every post I read. My main concern was with how some signatures and permanent fixtures on their posts were misspelled to the point it was distracting. Also, I must say that the OP has nothing to do with my ability to discuss and dispute real issues. I promise my OP was not mean spirited at all...but I feel some of the responses to my question were. :sad2:
What about texting? Does anyone think that maybe a decline in spelling is linked to the shortening of words while texting? (This is just a question....not an attack. :flower3: )

If misspelled words bother you maybe message boards are nt for you.

I am a poor speller, always have been. I do check my spelling/grammer for all my emails/business letters, but dont feel I need to on a message board.

If other's judge me for my spelling so be it, but I see that as their issues not mine.

I went back and read my OP to make sure I didn't sound "judgemental" when I asked the question "Are we becoming so dependent on spell check that we are losing our spelling skills?" and I don't feel that I am being judgemental. I also posted the question of whether or not texting may have something to do with it. :rolleyes1

Is anyone concerned with the decline in our spelling skills? I mean I know this is an informal forum and all, but I have noticed lots of spelling errors that are clearly not typos. To me there is a difference between a typo and a spelling issue. I have noticed words like "coming" and "schedule" spelled "comming" and "schedual". And some are part of peoples' signatures! Are we becoming so dependent on spell check that we are forgetting basic spelling skills?:confused3 Just wondering.....

First of all I didnt mention YOU in my reply I mentioned "others" who many have issues with my spelling. Although you, admittedly have issues with peoples spelling I didnt single you out.

And... you did not mention texting in your OP... you only seems bothered by people who misspell.

Oh that is definitely not me! I don't think I have been a member of the disboard long enough to be considered a cyber bully. Come to think of it, I don't think I have enough experience on the internet to be considered anything. Can I pass the shoes?:flower3:

It's not something I notice too much on a message board; if someone's post title is off or they've misspelled a word several times, I might mention it.

What worries me more is the decline of spelling and grammar overall. I often see mistakes in professional writing, like putting an apostrophe on a plural noun or using affect instead of effect.

:confused3

It's funny you said that because what prompted me to start this thread was I was reading several responses from this one poster who repeatedly misspelled the same word. (This poster was being rude also by the way). And I simply mentioned something about their spelling skills and I got a warning from the moderator. Have you ever received a warning for mentioning spelling? I wonder if that person got a warning for being rude since I got one for mentioning spelling.....:confused3

How about simple math? It seems like kids can't do simple math without a calculator. When I was in school we were not allowed to use a calculator until high school. Now it seems kids in elementary school are using calculators and can't add and subtract without them. Look at how many cashiers can't count change without the register telling them how much to hand back. So yes, I feel like technology has, in some ways, caused us to take a few steps back.

That is so true. My husband is a math instructor for our local university, and you would be surprised to hear some of the stories he has of incoming freshmen who can't do simple math. Now I will be the first one to admit that even though I am married to a math person, I am NOT a math person. But, he is not a spelling person so we compliment each other.
