Is anyone concerned with the decline in our spelling skills? I mean I know this is an informal forum and all, but I have noticed lots of spelling errors that are clearly not typos. To me there is a difference between a typo and a spelling issue. I have noticed words like "coming" and "schedule" spelled "comming" and "schedual". And some are part of peoples' signatures! Are we becoming so dependent on spell check that we are forgetting basic spelling skills?:confused3 Just wondering.....

You know it's funny, I found that spell check, over time, makes my spelling better. I find that I tend to spell the same words wrong over and over, so after a while I notice and learn to spell it the right way. I find I have many fewer errors now then I did when I started a "real" job 12 years ago.

Still, spelling isn't my strong suit so I'm sure I have at least one error in this very post!

I think the vast majority of people can spell fine. I don't notice horrible errors onthis board.

I do know for a fact (as a teacher) that schools focus less on spelling now in the primary grades. it's supposed to be a good thing. I suppose that is up for debate.

I am an excellent speller, but a very poor typist. Sometimes I can proofread, other times I just hit "submit" without thinking. I don't know how you can really tell if someone has committed a typo or poor spelling. :confused3

Anyway, to each his own. As I have said here before, I will be the last person to become a member of the "spelling police" and criticize others for their grammar/spelling/typos, because the first time I do, I'll have a typo and make a complete fool out of myself. Keep that in mind.;)

I'm wondering how many times people are proofreading their posts on this thread.

I guess that is where I am coming from. I am a teacher also, so maybe that is why I notice it more. I am in no way trying to pass judgement or be the spelling police by the way. The spelling errors I am referring to are clearly not typos made in the heat of a post. What I am speaking of are signatures saved to a posters' file, or a poster misspelling the same commonly used words over and over. :flower3:

Also, I must admit, I posted this thread because I wanted to talk about something other than the election. :-)

ITA :thumbsup2 Not to change the subject but your dog is so cute....:goodvibes

We've had this subject before, and I believe the conclusion was that, no, spelling is not important on a forum.

If you're going to be critiquing poster's spelling, I think you should double check your grammar and punctuation before you hit submit. ;)

Stashbin, I am also a teacher and I am, admittedly, a horrible speller. It's not laziness, it's not not lack of intelligence, forgetting basic spelling skills or even a lack of trying. I have always been awful at spelling. I have no idea why. I can not explain why my brain can not remember simple words like separate (yes, I will be doing a spell check before I post!). In addition, the migraine medicine that they have recently put me on has made my spelling problem even worse (never thought that would be a problem, lol). I found myself writing the word "sentences" on the board yesterday, and couldn't remember how to spell it. Lord help me!

I couldn't care less! Most of my mistakes are typos from hitting a key more than once or nott proooofff reading. I assume that is the case witth others. As long as I can figure out what someone is trying to say, they aren't applying for a job or teaching English, I can overlook the small stuff. Typos left on purpose.

No. I just assume many are like me, too lazy to proofread and typing fast while watching TV. Forum time is my relaxation time. I'm just not that motivated to assure perfection in every post.

I didn't think it was important but then I read a long post where the OP butchered pretty well every word over 6 letters. It detracts from the post and makes it hard to take the poster seriously. :upsidedow

A quick typo here and there is nothing, repeated misspellings of common words are :rolleyes1

See my tag.. ;)

I'm not sitting in a classroom right now - and would really prefer not to be treated as though I am.. I'm chatting - not taking a spelling test..:)
