Does Spectromagic always start at the front of the park and proceed toward Frontierland? Does it ever start the other way around?

I believe it starts in Frontierland. And that is also the best place I've found to watch it. Avoid Main Street like the plaque and if there are 2 parades in one night, go on rides during the first one and catch the second one, it will be half as crowed!!!

It is definatley a must see!!!!!!!!!!!
