Just wondering were everybody sets their tripod up for spectro. Do you just get a front line spot and worry about it getting knocked over or is there a better location away from the crowds that you like? tia

I've never been to Spectro, will be for the first time in a few weeks, but want to say that I don't think most people do set up a tripod for Spectro. Most of the non-flash shots of Spectro that you see on the boards are probably courtesty of higher ISOs and faster glass.

Tripods are good for night shots of still objects so a tripod would probably not help much in getting a clear shot of the floats during Spectro since they're moving. The longer shutter speed allowed by using a tripod would cause the floats to blur, like Tom's (WDWFigment) recent long exposure shot of the parade.

HTH!

Thanks Ann never thought of that but it so true. I am still curious about a good spot anyway. I plan on using my 50mm f1.8.

Agreed on not using a tripod. I used a monopod a little the first time I shot it and never bothered afterwards. Since everything is moving, you need a fairly fast shutter speed - fast enough to hand-hold the camera.

The exception would be if you're trying to do a long exposure shot.

As to where - I think most anywhere! It all depends on the kind of shot you want. I have most often set up near the loop at the front of Main St - not a great location due to the crowds but I don't really stake out a spot early and somehow we usually end up there! Next trip I will probably try to to see it in some new (to me) locations.

Susan (Chickabowa) has probably the best picture I have seen taken of Spectro on her recent pictures thread. I believe she was on the circle in front of the castle. All you need now is her skill and a D3 with a 24-70 lens!

I didn't use a tripod for spectro either. Last time we were there we got a spot in front of the castle on the left hand side at the turn towards liberty square. These shots were taken there with a 50mm f1.8 ISO1600 handheld.

Thanks. That saved me a lot of trouble trying to set up and all. I just assumed that you always used a tripod for all night shots.

That peacock is the single most beautiful sight at WDW, in my eyes!
