Speaking of vacuums...know a good one for wood floors?

We have real wood floors through out our house, and only one room with carpet (the family room). I'd love a Dyson but can't justify the cost for vacuuming one room, and anyway, the Hoover isn't dead yet.

Anyway, the wood floors are becoming a pain. I have to sweep them and then run over them with a Swifer to get the dog fur. So double the work. I'd pay to get a vacuum that could handle both hardwood floors AND my carpet, but I'd settle for a broom-vac for just the wood floors and keep my current vac for the family room carpet. I'm worried that my current vac would damage the wood floors, and don't want to invest in a new one unless I know it won't damage them.

Any suggestions?

I have a Kenmore with onboard attachments, regular upright. It has a switch to turn off the beater bar for using on wood or other non-carpet floors or for when you use the attachments. It works ok "vacuuming" the floors but if I use the brush attachment on the end of the pole things that come with it it works GREAT! It uses a cloth HEPA bag and is a hardside vacuum.

It is an older model of this one. The little handimate jr is an AWESOME attachment. It is a handheld vacuum head with a beater bar. It works great on stairs and furniture.

The only room we have carpet in is our bedroom and the basement so I have a lot of hardwood as well.

I have a Miele. It wasn't cheap but it has rubberized wheels and horsehair bristles. No plastic or hard pieces from the vacuum touch the hardwood. There is an attachment for the carpets that has a rotating brush. I'm very pleased with mine. I bought it right after we had the entire house hardwooded.

I have a Kenmore cannister vaccuum. Just switch the carpet attachment with the floor attachment. Love it with all the tile in my house!

I have this really cheap little cordless Swiffer vacuum that I use on the hardwood floors and the tile.

It picks up the small items that the Swiffer alone wouldn't get, but the Swiffer cloth gets the dust that the vacuum alone doesn't get.

It's very easy to use.

The Roomba works very well on wood floors!

We moved into a new house a few months ago and the whole first floor is wood, and our old Hoover Windtunnel vacuum didn't work great on the floors. It's great on carpet, but on wood it just spit the stuff out the back and generally created a bigger mess. We ended up buying an Oreck which works great on the wood floors and the carpet. My only complaint is it is lower to the floor than my other vacuum, so it doesn't do well with "big" things, but in general we love it because it is lightweight and easy to use, and works pretty well if we pick up the big chunks like macaroni or pieces of cookies, etc.) My husband actually "loves" to vacuum with it. Go figure.

I LOVE my Oreck! Every other regular, full sized sweeper feels like it weighs about 100 pounds after using my Oreck! :)

I have a DirtDevil Broom Vac I use many times a day on our wood floors and kitchen as well. :thumbsup2 It works great and I don't believe it costs as much as a regular vacuum. Also, it is very convenient, as it stays plugged in and charged, so all you do is unplug the charger and go...No need to even store it in a closet! It is no bigger than a regular broom. Good luck in your decision! :wave2:

I have wood floors and just bought a refurb dyson. Friends told me it works wonders and is fine on wood floor - I saw plenty of reviews that said the same.

I have a Rainbow and love it. I have all wood floors except the family room is carpeted and bedrooms/stairs. My old canister (kenmore) wouldn't suck up the fine dust that accumulates on the floor.

I don't know what I would do without my Dyson. I know it is expensive but it picks up fine particles.

I would like to get a Roomba though. I think that will be my next thing.

We just put in hardwood floors right before Xmas and I bought a Shark. We only have throw rugs downstairs so I use it everywhere and it works great. Got it at Target for $50

We have a Dyson, and you'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands to get me to part with it. We have wood floors, porcelain tile, berber carpet, plush pile carpet, and wool area rugs (lots of years of remodeling), and it works GREAT on all. Just turn off the carpet beater on hard floors. Self adjusting height is great going from one surface to another. Plus, we have 2 golden retrievers who each shed enough to build a new dog each week, and the Dyson NEVER clogs up. I can't tell you how many vaccuums I returned or just gave up on (including a Rainow, a Hoover and a Kirby) because they clogged from the dog's hair. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MY DYSON!!!!!!

I also have a dyson...christmas present from mom/dad/brother 2 christmases ago...I love it. And I do use it on my real wood floors. Just use the 'bare floor' selection.

I aslo have a Hoover floormate...and it doesn't suck up enough stuff for my liking. Yes, it works well to CLEAN the floors...but the 'vacuum' option kinda sucks...well, actually...doesn't suck.

Wow, I never would have considered a Dyson for hardwood. Maybe I can talk DH into getting one afterall.... :scratchin

Thanks, everyone!

Well I was raised with Electrolux all around since that is what my father sells for a living and I have always liked them. They are good for both hard wood floors as well as carpet and have the extra attachments. They are alittle costly but worth it! He is semi retired now but I can send him your way to give you a demonstration, since we are sorta in the same area...LOL Just cannot comment on any other kind....sorry...never used them....LOL!

I am telling you...when you use it YOU WILL FREAK OUT!!! It picks up everything. It is worth it.

I have a Eureka Optima and it is AMAZING!!!!!! (Eureka's actually are made by Electrolux!) We have 4 cats and a Sheltie dog and our entire house, except for 1 room has wood floors. I researched vacuums for over a month before deciding on it. It's lightweight ( but has the power of an expensive heavier vacuum), has an adjustable handle that telescopes up or down depending on the heighth of the person using it and the best feature is the on/off switch....it has 2 choices......one for carpets and one for wood floors. You just flick the switch and it turns off the revolving brush so that it just sucks up all the stuff on the wood floors...it's really neat to use as it sucks stuff up(such as hairballs) from over a foot away!!!! :teeth: I bought mine at Target for $55.00 and am still amazed at how fantastic it is. I always hated vacuuming as I have RTC tendonitis and my shoulder would ache after vacuuming, this one is so light even my 3 1/2 y.o. begs to use it!
