Speaking of sprinkles...

Funny thing though, down here Jimmie is considered slang for condom:confused:
so i'm sure if you ask for jimmies on your ice cream the poor server might be a bit confused.

I'm from Orlando and have never heard jimmies were a slang word for condoms. :confused3

I grew up in CT. We had chocolate shots and colored sprinkles. I'm outside Philly right now and they say jimmies. I will never, ever order jimmies!

(Besides, that is a term used between my BFF and her DH. I don't see how she can order jimmies with a straight face!)

Living in the South or Southwest all my life, I can honestly say that this is the very first time I have EVER even heard of sprinkles called jimmies.

Now, my question is this……where did the term “jimmies” come from? What is the reference?

I'm from Philly and Jimmies is the word there. I always thought sprinkles were rain drops until i went to college:rotfl:

Now I'm in VA, and they are sprinkles..............NOT!

Jimmies it is for me! I like frappes, too. ;) (I'm from MA)

Jimmies were first developed by Just Born Candy Company, which was founded by Samuel Born, who immigrated to the US from Russia around 1910. Born opened a small candy-making and retail store in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1923. Soon after opening the Brooklyn store, Born invited his brothers-in-law, Irv and Jack Shaffer, to join him in the business. With his capable partners handling the factory and growing sales, Born was free to direct his energies to his many candy-related inventions.

In 1930 James Bartholomew was lucky enough to acquire a job at Just Born, Inc. Bartholomew operated a machine that produced Born's latest invention, tiny hot-dog shaped chocolate sprinkly things. But what to call them? Born briefly pondered that question before deciding to accredit the name to the producer, Jimmy Bartholomew. The new product was named JIMMIES, which is still a trademarked name, but no longer made by Just Born. The dictionary definition for JIMMIES used to be "decorative things." They have also been called toppettes, shots, fancies, trimettes and sprinkles.

When they came to Boston, (circa 1947) Brigham's was the first to promote JIMMIES and did not charge for them. In Boston, JIMMIES are to ice cream like mustard & relish are to a hot dog. Brigham's has continued the long tradition of serving JIMMIES free of charge on ice cream cones and dishes.

I grew up in MA and we called 'em jimmies. My DD13, a Mainah, calls 'em sprinkles. I remember the look she gave me when I asked her if she wanted jimmies... the ONE time I asked her. It was the same look I get when I talk about going to get a drink at the bubbler.

Haha! I'm from MA too and I call them jimmies! I go to school in NY and one day I was at work in the Admissions office and said "I'll be right back... I'm going to go get a drink from the bubbler" and my friend who is also from MA knew EXACTLY what I meant and all the other kids we worked with (who at the time were from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio) all looked at me like I had 15 heads, which promptly started the debate about what we call things!

Jimmie's is a New England thing...you say that in FL and they look at you like you are a nut case
I'm from FL and I had no idea what a jimmie was until I opened this thread! :rotfl:

I call them sprinkles but jimmies sounds cuter!

I am originally from NH, now living in MA and call the chocolate ones jimmies and the rainbow ones sprinkles. One of my co-workers the other day ordered a "grinder" and the woman behind the counter, who was not from NE, looked at her like she had 10 heads!!!:rotfl2:

I grew up in South Boston and we always called them jimmies, I still do. But here ont he Cape where I live there are so many ice cream stands and they all call them sprinkles. Chocolate Sprinkles, Rainbow Sprinkles you name it they have all the flavors, but no JIMMIES!
Good Thread:thumbsup2

Originally from northern RI.
Jimmies
Grinders
Frappes

It seems since there are more national chains now like Subway, Cold Stone Creamery & others, that the use of regional terms are going away.

Jimmies is now sprinkles.
Grinders are now subs.
Frappes are now shakes.

Sprinkles- the chocolate ones are chocolate sprinkles and the rainbow ones are rainbow sprinkles LOL- pretty simple LOL

Another Philly girl who calls them jimmies!

As a side note, we just added them to our ice cream bar at the club where I work. The Club Mgr grew up in Wales where they called them "Hundreds and Thousands" :rotfl: :rotfl:

I grew up calling them jimmies but then lived some time in CA and started calling them sprinkles and its stuck. My kids also call them sprinkles even though we live in MA and everyone else calls them jimmies.

BTW - mutli colored sprinkles or jimmies are called Rainbow Sprinkles or Rainbow Jimmies in my family. The chocolate ones are called Chocolate Sprinkles or Chocolate Jimmies.
