to wait for a check to clear the bank???

I wrote a check to our church youth group for some activity for DD last fall and it still hasn't cleared the bank. It was for $200 and it drives me nuts that my account is off.

I sincerely doubt that's the bank's issue. My guess would be your check is still sitting somewhere around the church office.

If a check is actually presented at bank it's rarely more than 72 hours before it clears--usually much faster.

I believe that the bank is only supposed to honor checks 90 past the date they were written, but I think that's loosely enforced at best.

I'd agree with pearlieg, banks usually clear check fairly quickly. In this case, I'd go to the church and let them know that you still have a check that's outstanding and that it was written to them. This may be a case of the check slipping under some paper work and being forgotten.

This is true, I actually had a bank employee tell me that they don't pay a lot of attention to the date on the check.

I would contact the church. Sounds like its lost somewhere in their system.

I wrote a check to my sister and gave it to her on Feb 26th. She said she cashed it that week. To this day it has never cleared my bank.

That's what I think happened. I don't really remember exactly which activity this check was for so I'm not sure which youth director to ask. Anyway...

How long can a check be held before it is cashed? --That should have been my original question.

We (employer) asked the bank that once when we had a payroll check outstanding for months and months. They said that typically its 6 months. HOwever, if the check was brought in to the bank they would cash it at, at any time. They would question it if it was put in the ATM machine.

If I were you, I would probably pay to put a stop payment on it. If the church tries to cash it, then you can explain to them what happened. Did you personally give it to someone at the church or did you send it with your dd? Could have she lost it somewhere and it never made it there? Does the church have an office person that does accounting that you could ask?

I gave it to the youth director who would have given it to the church admin person who would have given it to the treasuer to deposit.

I think it got lost somewhere. Thanks everyone. I'll try to back track with the church. If that doesn't work I'll stop payment.
