COME ON, and get a freaking grip already. "We" aren't singing our national anthem in the tongue of illegal immigrants. Some Hispanic singer recorded a version of the anthem in Spanish.

This act did not spontaneously create legislation requiring every American to learn to sing the song in Spanish, or to mandate that a bilingual version of the anthem be played before sporting events, or cause the Constitution to burst into flames. It's just a stupid record. So don't buy the stupid record, don't play it, don't listen to it.

But it's very existence is hardly a sign of the Apocalypse. In two weeks, this will be a dusty old news item.

I love your reply.........can you tell? :thumbsup2

I voted - disagree

This entire uproar isn't about a song or new lyrics.

It's about the line being blurred, deliberately so, between legal immigration and illegal immigration. It's about a sense of entitlement on behalf of a group of people who may or may not be here legally.

It's about whether or not we keep a permanent underclass of people doing "jobs Americans won't do".

It's about contractors and corporate America helping their bottom line to the detriment of the rest of American society and the exploited workers themselves.

And, other than the fringe elements, I haven't seen one person demand an end to legal immigration.

OKay, something is weird here! I voted agree cuz I agree that it is wrong but most of the votes were disagree.!? How does that work??

I know, it wasn't a good way to word the poll. It should be something like " I like the idea, " I hate the idea"...... it was / is a little confusing. So, I took disagree to mean that you are against it..... and boy am I against it!!

I do not think making Mexico a territory would be a good idea.

Agree, I think that Mexico would have a real problem with that since they are an independent nation.

Personally, I don't care about the song. It could be argued that this is freedom of speech - something the US is supposed to support around the world. Bad taste? Maybe. Expression of admiration for the US? Maybe

But there are certainly more important things to dwell on.

I'm just waiting for someone to post they don't see anything wrong with it and declare the rest of us racists.

Man, you can't see the forest for the trees!

I learned the "La Marseillaise" in French. Let our Latino residents learn the Star Spangled Banner in English, as it was written. Obviously, I have no problem with learning the translation while learning the English as it helps with the singing but the song should be sung as written.

I think it is wrong, plain and simple.

Imagine "God Save the Queen" sung in German....would this happen?? NO WAY, yet in the good ol' USA, we'll sing our national anthem in the tongue of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS so they feel more welcome...COME ON!!!

Actually... the English supporters have been encouraged to sing 'God Save the Queen' (which is the British anthem not the English anthem - I believe that 'Land of Hope and Glory' is used for England at the Commonwealth Games and English people would like their own national anthem like the Welsh and Scottish have, and to keep 'God Save the Queen' as purely British... but I digress!) in German during the Football World Cup (being held in Germany this year).

It won't be happening.

It's odd though - I imagine that the official language of Wales is Welsh and the official language of Scotland is Gaelic, but us Welsh and (I believe) the Scottish speak mostly English, and anyone who can speak the native languages can speak English anyway. :confused3

Just curious -- why does it matter what language one uses to proclaim their allegiance to their country?

Does it help that the tune for "The Star Spangled Banner" was stolen in the first place from the British?

I'm against it, plain and simple. It was refreshing to see a news story last night about a hispanic radio station here in our area is refusing to play it.

Ok. A question for those that are not bothered by it or can't understand the uproar from others.

What would someone have to do (ok, leave Bush OUT of this) to make you feel the way we do? What would you consider extremely disrespectful to America (PLEASE!! Leave Bush out of this!) that would get a rise out of you?

Why do feel like everyone needs to agree with you??? There are plenty of other more desperate and horrific things to put energy and thought into:

Thousands upon thousands of people starving and being murdered in Sudan.

The AIDs epidemic all over the world.

Homelessness in our own backyards.

Child predators on the internet preying on our children every day.

This SSB translation is such a minor blip on the radar of things to be indignant about.

It's not their country. If I drive over the border into Canada and start singing an alternate version of O Canada, does that make it proclaiming allegiance to my country? Is Canada my country simply because I happen to be standing on its soil at that exact moment?

I don't really care...it's not the National Anthem. It's a song sung to the same melody and that happens all the time. Many singers/songwriters use other people's tunes and put their own words to it. I don't see how this is any different.

So many issues, so much demagogery, so much BS. Here's my contribution to that lethal cocktail:

You would think the Hispanic community would get as up in arms about the fact that their high school graduation rate is less than 50%.

For a community that claims immigration, legal or otherwise, is to grab a piece of the American dream, you would think they'd do a little bit more to insure that their children grasp that first rung on the American dream ladder, an education.

:rolleyes1

My comment is specific to the question why everyone is not outraged about the SSB issue. The items I listed are issues that are more disturbing to me than a re-write of the SSB.

And don't assume that a graduation rate of 50% (which is not the case in every community of Hispanics) is not being agressively addressed or is improving.

My guess is that those who like it are ILLEGALS, have ILLEGAL firends, or really don't feel like the USA.

Or, for some reason, we're just not offended by the song being sung in Spanish. I have no idea what "don't feel like the USA" is supposed to mean.

my honest reply:

I thought about, started to get a bit worked up, then thought about it again, and decided I honestly could care less.

It's not like they are going to sing it a baseball games, it's not our "official" national anthem. All they did was remake the song in Spanish. They do it with Christmas carols too. :teeth:

See I think some people wake up every day, and scour the internet/TV just looking for something to get worked up about.
