A law requiring the national anthem to only ever be performed in English, probably. Investing one's respect in a song or a flag or a Pledge, instead of in the purest embodiment of the American spirit - the demonstration and exercise of our freedom of speech.

"Freedom of speech" is such a cliche - we all get tired of hearing it, even me.

But we are not the greatest country in the world because our anthem is so impressive, or our flag is so cool, or our White House so awe-inspiring. We are the greatest country in the world because you - whether you are a citizen or not - can sing that anthem in another language, or burn that flag in protest, or stand in front of the White House and say what you really think about it's current occupant.

Freedom of speech means you haev the right to say it. It doesn't mean that you are right.

And while there may be a "right" for this perversion of the anthem-the message it conveys is wrong.

This is not about civil rights---this is about another country and other nationalities who think they are entitled to be here despite the laws of this country.

Citizenship of any country is not an entitlement unless you were legally born there (an illegal crossing to give birth---not legal--so child should not be a citizen).

I cannot go to any other nation in the country and demand citizenship. They would laugh in my face.

What would you consider extremely disrespectful to America (PLEASE!! Leave Bush out of this!) that would get a rise out of you?

To be honest, what bothers me most is when I hear Americans say that majority rules in this country, and that those who disagree should just get out.

To me, that exhibits a shocking lack of comprehension about what makes being an American so special. The genius of the constitution and its Bill of Rights amendments is that they are designed to protect the rights of the individual, not the majority. The framers made it especially difficult to amend the constitution, because they did not want the rights of individuals to be determined by a simple majority vote. The alternative to what we have now is called "mob rule" and it's a fine system if you like your freedoms determined by a flavor of the month government. Yet almost daily I hear people that I consider to be intelligent Americans who think whatever 51% of Americans say on a particular day on a particular issue is the law, no ifs ands or buts.

To sum that all up, what I find "disrespectful to America" is Americans who do not appreciate their own freedoms. They would basically give them up because they happen to be in agreement with the majority on the issue they are advocating. That's shortsighted and wrongheaded, but it seems these days people are more concerned with being on the most popular side of an issue instead of trying to decide which side is the right one.

Is this a thread about the Spanish SSB or immigration reform?

How is relocation a civil liberty?

What civil liberties are being violated???

You want to move here--do so legally!

I cannot go park my butt in any country and then scream my civil liberties are being violated if they ask me to leave for not being properly documented!

Since when did USA become United Countries of the World?

To quote Emma Lazarus (on the Statue of Liberty):
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door"

Remember when Italians were "With Out Papers" or the Irish fleeing starvation? They were illegal too. We need to figure out how to deal with this problem without creating an underclass.

Last I checked--my butt needs a passport to reenter my own country. If I don't have one---have to go through some long long process so that I can enter legally.

Sorry to hear about your butt.

What does this have to do with it? Sorry, you won't get much sympathy from me. I went to Mexico on a cruise, we dealt with the people in Mexico that we were buying something from in Spanish. What's your point? I don't travel to countries where I expect people to talk to me.

My statement was referring to a comment about contradicting myself made by another person, which I was not.

My point was that a majority of US Citizens do just that, maybe you are the exception, they either go on vacation or move to another country and expect everybody to accomodate them by speaking english. But it is insulting if it happens the other way around. That is a ridiculous double standard, so if you don't want people to do it to you, do not do it to other people. People can not demand respect if they themselves are disrespectful. Teach by example.

Freedom of speech means you haev the right to say it. It doesn't mean that you are right.

Which is exactly what I would say about calling a Spanish language version of the Star Spangled Banner a "perversion". I would also say that you are overdramatizing. And you could disagree with that too. Ain't America great?

This is not about civil rights---this is about another country and other nationalities who think they are entitled to be here despite the laws of this country.

This thread is about the Spanish Star Spangled Banner, or at least that's what the title says. Goodness knows there are plenty of other threads in which to freely rant about Those Awful Illegals Who Are Ruining Our Country.

TOTALLY WRONG! We don't go to other countries and change their national anthem to English so why should ours be done in Spanish. And to not even translate it properly. Unbelievable. Are we going to Spanish speaking countries and rewriting their national anthems. I live a predominately hispanic community and most of my coworkers, neighbors and friends are disgusted with this.

It is as ludicrous as killing people because of a political cartoon (think Muhommed wearing a bomb turbin).
Uh, I'm sorry, but this debate is NOTHING like what happened there.

Am I missing something? What the heck is the 31st amendment? Last time I checked there were only 27.

Geez, I hope none of you people sing Silent Night at Christmas, or O Christmas Tree.
Actually I do sing these songs in the language I first learned them in, German, the language they were written in. I learned the English versions later and they are not the best translations to say the least. Oh and Silent Night I also sign in Spanish and ASL.

Ummm--that would be b/c they are a US territory as is the US Virgin Islands--and maybe Guam...I forget the rest.

So---we should make Mexico a territory then. Problem solved.

Ummm, I know that they are a US territory.. My husband and kids are Puerto Rican. Since this song is coming out now with all of the issues going on I was just suprised you would have singers who have no issue with immigration since they are legal.

I do not think making Mexico a territory would be a good idea.

My guess is that those who like it are ILLEGALS, have ILLEGAL firends, or really don't feel like the USA.

Those who justify to continue ignoring the problem b/c there are those who are content with making $1-$2 per hour.....have already created an underclass.

They are condoning working for literal slave wages.

I don't condone working for slave wages nor am I saying should we ignore the problem.

I believe that there should be an expanded legal process to deal with this very serious problem other than the knee jerk (and stupid) reaction of "kick them all out!"

There needs to be a way to balance the need for low cost labor and creating opportunities for those that are hard working and law-abiding who are striving for a better life like our ancestors did.

No one seems to be willing to THINK through the problem. Sadly we have become a nation of sound bites. :sad2:

Wow ...This should end this thread, as nothing more rational and intelligent can be said. It has nothing to do with the title of this thread, but we have been of the subject for a while now.

You're excused--I make them two :teeth: .

I was commenting between the three threads so have lost track of who said it--but I was not attributing it to you.

Also--I never said kick them all out. My biggest problem is the entitlement attitude.

I just don't think unless some proper channel has been taken--then one does not have the legal right to be anywhere on US soil. It is that way in most countries.

So those who support the "civil rights" of illegal aliens--well....you lose the right to be here when you get here illegally. That is between you and the government to work out--but don't for one second cry civil rights violation when it was you who violated the law. (generic you--not talking about "you").

This isn't about discrimination--but that is precisely what the anthem and the protests and everything are making it out to be and that what makes it wrong. They didn't play by the rules. The govt is acting like it wants to fix the problem and everyone is crying foul b/c they perceive discrimination. There is not one other country on the planet that is given that much FREEDOM to immigrate their citizens to our country with an open door policy.

A National Anthem, in any country, is the anthem of that country, therefore should be sung in the language of that country!! I cannot believe this was even considered, let alone being allowed to happen. I am TOTALLY outraged!!

Imagine "God Save the Queen" sung in German....would this happen?? NO WAY, yet in the good ol' USA, we'll sing our national anthem in the tongue of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS so they feel more welcome...COME ON!!!

I think that LEGAL US CITIZENS should march with the AMERICAN FLAG and PROTEST the march of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!! Why is no one marching for the rights of US citizens?

This country is seriously twisted!

BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!

AND for any radio or TV station who would play the "song" (I use that term loosely) should be shut down. I love how EVERYONE takes our constitution and amendments to another level. I don't think that when the USA declared OUR N.A. it NEVER crossed thier minds that people would sing it in another language or for that matter, change the words to make it "hip".

This isn't freedom of speech I don't care what anyone says!! This is just a slap in our faces and I'm sure other countries are getting a good laugh at this too!

It's one thing for someone to sing a song in their native language ( For instance..... Brittany Spears' Hit Me Baby One More Time ) BUT to take a nation's N.A. and "pop it up" and change it etc..... That's sooooooooooo wrong.

COME ON, and get a freaking grip already. "We" aren't singing our national anthem in the tongue of illegal immigrants. Some Hispanic singer recorded a version of the anthem in Spanish.

This act did not spontaneously create legislation requiring every American to learn to sing the song in Spanish, or to mandate that a bilingual version of the anthem be played before sporting events, or cause the Constitution to burst into flames. It's just a stupid record. So don't buy the stupid record, don't play it, don't listen to it.

But it's very existence is hardly a sign of the Apocalypse. In two weeks, this will be a dusty old news item.

Nobody's going to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" in Spanish at state ceremonies. It's just some recording artists who are doing a version of it in Spanish. They're not petitioning the government to have the anthem changed (the law recognizing the anthem doesn't have the words in it, anyway). Get a grip.

Ive got a grip already! :thumbsup2 No they haven't petitioned to have the anthem changed as yet. They are probably waiting at least until next week. :rotfl2:
