In September, some head honchos are traveling to Spain to go over arrangments for an exhibit in Epcot with government officials and corporate sponsors. Soarin' is being pushed as a possible attraction option (the cheaper one). The more expensive one is a boat ride based on Don Quiote (excuse the spelling) similar to the Sinbad boat ride in Disney Seas. The final details just need to be ironed out, and then the contracts get signed.

And my source....well, let's just say it came from someone who sits at the table when all the division directors for WDW Resorts and Attractions meet.

If that is true, I'd throw all my political correctness out of the window and plead for a miniature copy of the Sagrada Familia. Sure, I know it'll never happen (there's a reason why the original has been under construction for over 100 years now, and is still far from being finished), but it sure would be amazing to see!

(for those of you who don't know what I am talking about, try http://www.sagradafamilia.org/eng/principal.htm )

Nice rumor, though i could envision other countries i would perfer. But i hold little hope for it unless wdw releases some type of official announcement, they are in the business of downsizing and not increasing guests options.

Spain would be lovely! Surprising but lovely.

I wonder if maybe sometimes a country might not approach Disney rather than the other way around? Could this be good advertising?

At this point, ANY new country would be welcome--that whole area needs some life pumped into it.
So I hope it's true--and I hope it gets built before I'm too old to enjoy it!!

Spain will be present this year at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival (October 19 - November 17, 2002):

Discover Andalucía (Spain)-NEW!
Fall in love with the people and flavors of this culturally rich land in the south of Spain. Among the arbors of an Andalucían courtyard, you will discover flavorful tapas, olives and oils, the art of Flamenco, fine sherries, and master craftsmen.

Great rumor! I agree that Spain would be a great addition to the world showcase. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Their presence at the food and wine festival is a hopeful sign.

Spain does intrigue me, but I'd rather see india or south america.

"...and then the contracts get signed."

Yep, everything always moves on really well until Disney lays out how much money they want. Ask Nestle, Isreal, Spain (first time), Russia, Brazil, Austrailia...

Mike, I hope the rumor turns out to be true, and we get a Spanish showcase, complete with a nice attraction. Spain would be a very nice addition.

However, please don't take offense if there is some skepticism. As AV points out, there have been talks before, and the talks have never amounted to anything because when it came time to talk turkey, the deal would fall through.

Hopefully, this deal will buck the trend.

Spain would be a beautiful addition to the WS. Where would they put it?

There is the spot where the Millenium Villiage was. Or the spot where the African drums/shops are (DW thinks it was put there as a not so subtle reminder of the presence of AK).

"However, please don't take offense if there is some skepticism. "

None taken at all. I am trying (with all of my strength) to be an optimist about this rumor. It just has been so long since we have heard Disney actually talking to a nation about putting in a pavillion. I remember the days of "Switzerland is coming!", "Russia to be placed in WS," and others. However, since I heard this straight from the horse's mouth, I have more hope.

of course, of course. Go right to the source and ask that horse, he'll give you the answer that you endorse, he's always on a steady course, talk to ....

Oh, I'm sorry.

I'd love to see another pavillion WITH an attraction in World Showcase. Another Morocco, Japan or Germany would be of very little value to me, though.

I hear you, but as someone who REALLY needs to join Shopaholics Anonymous, I *love* all three of those pavilions! Especially Japan, with the Mitsukoski department store. *shiver* of joy! ;)

On a more serious note, I also really like the extent of the theming in Morocco - from the bazaar to the beautiful mosaics to the fab(!) Restaurant Marakesh, it's all very well done, IMO. There doesn't have to be an official "attraction" for me to spend lots of time in and gain lots of enjoyment from a WS country.

I'd really love to see a replica of the Gughenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain (see the opening seen of the last James Bond film or this link to the museum ).

Maybe some Basque revolutionaires too! ;)

This would be very welcome news, if it comes to pass. I would love to see a new country WITH an attraction! I firmly believe that every country should have some sort of attraction to draw everyone in!!!! I love the shops, too, but they really need an attraction to pull EVERYONE into each particular pavillion. ::keeping my fingers crossed::

Barb, I agree. Just imagine if every Country around the lagoon had an attraction. What a park that would be!
