Spaceship Earth

The first time I went to EPCOT - spaceship earth was closed. I was so mad. I forgot all about it until I went back years later on my honeymoon. When I saw it I said to my wife: We gotta go on this I waited years to see what the heck is inside that Sphere. It was love at first ride. I loved the relaxing aspect of it and just thought it was so great. I'm a great fan of dark rides, but sadly it seems they are being replaced by simulators and thrill rides. I fear that Disney is turning into a six flags type of park with all the new thrill rides and less of the dark rides. One day the dark rides will be non-existent. I guess the new generation wants bigger, faster, etc.

I hope this doesn't happen and people fall in love with a simpler time when they wanted to learn something and get inspired on a ride and not just to get spun around in a fast moving vehicle.

Well, they do have to pull out all of the ATT sponsor stuff, and wasn't Microsoft going to sponsor Time Racers?

Who knows, only time will tell. I would have thought that they would have built Mission::Space in the geosphere.

I also used to love all of the cool stuff that was inside. I really liked the part where you rode on the fiber-optic cable all over the world (post rid stuff) Most of that was gutted, a year or two before ATT left them; what was the deal with that???

Both my girls (6 & 7) insist that Spaceship Earth is the first think we do when we get there in May of this year!

Hi all,
One of our favorite cast member stories in the last 30 years was the young man who told us about the "security cameras" in all of the dark slow rides including Spaceship Earth and the romantic encounters caught on tape that so many unsuspecting folks did not know was "live and in color.!!"

Peace...Ted

Isn't it true that the proposed ride would have been too stressful for the geosphere? This is one time when I'm glad that progress was halted.

This is totally true...TG!!!:) I mean what would Epcot be without it's icon...the GIANT golf ball?!?! :teeth:

Some of the plans I read about for a new coaster in SE (it almost seems I saw concept drawing too,but can't remember where I saw them...OY! ) had the coaster coming outside the geosphere and track around part of FW.

If they were to get rid of Spaceship Earth it would be a big blow to me as it is one of the rides that I can ride without a big wait and that I can relax on. All my friends love the ride to and I really dont know many people who dislike Spaceship Earth

Tednvon, you bring back memories... SE can be like a "tunnel of love" when you are a teenager... I had forgotten I did some smooching there back in the early 1980's!!! :)

We love it, too. I love history, I love dark rides, I love the fact there is no wait, and I love not having to get off. I am thrilled there is no rush to change it.

Something about the dark, slow ride and Jeremy Irons narration makes me want to take a 17 minute nap.

I agree about Jeremy Irons, but that isn't a good thing. I miss the older version with Walter Cronkite as narrator. Jeremy Irons presents his narration cold and emotionless. Blah...

Nile455--you are so right. Irons seems to be reading the script with as much emotion as the local radio announcer giving the days school lunch menu---. Cronkite was much better.

Dancingbear--I loved that song "Tomorrows Child".
