Spaceship Earth: Mickey hand or no?

Mickey Hand or Not?

  • Yes! Love love LOVE the Mickey Hand

  • Please return Spaceship Earth to its elegant simplicity of yesterday

  • I never look...too busy walking past the thing

  • Color me totally apathetic about it either way

My first and only trip so far was in December 2004. I've only seen it with the Mickey hand. So I'm not really sure whether it looks better with or without.

Prior to our vacation this July, the last time I was in Epcot was 1997. I know this may amaze some of you, but to be honest, I really didn't remember the fact that there wasn't a hand on it until I read this thread. I thought the hand with the Epcot sign made for some nice pictures, but that's just mho. It doesn't matter either way for me :confused3

I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just a floating hand. It looks terribly TACKY if you ask me. If it looked nice thats one thing but it doesn't. Remove the dumb hand Disney

I like the hand too. I think a hand over Spaceship Earth is much less dramatic of a change than a cake covered castle. I think it gives it character.

I voted for the Mickey hand because it adds to it, I think. Don't get me wrong. I was there when EPCOT first open and I love the Giant Golf Ball. It is a timeless classic that will always be one of my favorites. But I love mickey and want to be able to see remnants of him everywhere I can.

:love: ::MickeyMo :love:

Honestly, I never expected so many people to like the Mickey hand. It is pretty surprising how many people prefer it.

Personally, I just can't seem to get used to it. I really miss Spaceship Earth in all its simple beauty. Maybe I wouldn't mind the hand so much if it didn't look so, well, gaudy to me.

I appreciate all of your opinions! Thanks folks. ;)

didn't like the hand when it went up, but now it would probably look odd without it.

I've seen it both ways, but I like it! And it makes for a good scrapbooking photo...It's all about the pictures when you're a scrapper! :goodvibes

I like the hand. I can't believe there are so many that don't like the hand. I especially like it at night. I got a great shot of SE at night but all you can see is the lighted Epcot. I personally like it. Can't wait to see it in a little over a month!!! :cool1:

In terms of my personal preference, I liked it better without. But in so many ways, it's a nostalgia thing. I miss the pre-wand Spaceship Earth the same way I miss Horizons, Mr. Toad, and the Seacabs. I miss them because I have happy memories of things the way they were, and it's sad not to be able to experience them that way again.

But from a practical perspective, I'm kind of glad the wand is there. We all know that there are a lot of visitors who still can't remember which parks are Disney's, and so the little (big?) reminders like Mickey's wand and hat serve to bring an extra helping of MK-style Disney magic into parks that otherwise have a very different feel. I really don't mind that at all, especially since it doesn't involve getting rid of any of the things I most like about the parks. :)

I said that I didn't care and on many levels I don't but I do lean towards liking it. I think that it ties in the relationship between WDW and Epcot. In other words, part of it! It carries over the magic from Magic Kingdom to Epcot. Let's face it Epcot is, not only, not what Walt had imagined but it isn't even the original EPCOT Ctr. anymore.

How many times have I heard the comment from Disney puriest about how upset they would get when someone would say. "Today I'm going to Epcot, but, tomorrow I'm headed for Disney World. The hand makes that statement move from being unaware to being almost stupid.

So I really don't love, love, love it. I like it either way and if they lose the glittering stars on the top of SSE I even think it is a plus!

:cool2:

I voted for the Mickey hand. I can't say that I "love love love" it, but I do like it there. If they removed it wouldn't be upset - I just think that it adds a little something.

Mickey hand on Spaceship Earth has been there since 2000 for the Milleniem celebration... and it's still there. I feel the Mickey hand with the "magical" wand is now part of the Ball. I'm sure they will keep it for a at least another year or two until the 50th Ann Celeb is over. I like it the way it is.
