Space Shuttle Launch And WDW

Hi all ...

I'm sure "up close and personal" is amazing but several years ago (maybe more) we were at OKW and I happened to flip on the TV as they were counting down to a launch. My DW and I then quickly ran out front and faced west and saw the bright yellow streak that was the shuttle. Very cool! We were amazed at both how bright it was and how quickly it ascended and disappeared! The smoke trail hung in the air for a while.

We live about 2 hours south of KSC and can see the shuttle launches from here. I would love to be right there for a launch sometime though.

The only other time I have been to Orlando was in 1996 and we were lucky enough to see a night time launch. We stayed at what now is the Wyndam Palace and when I mentioned the launch to the person at the check-in they said they would give me a room on the right side of the hotel so I can watch. The launch was at some absurd hour like 3 am, but we got up and watched. IT was VERY cool.

I am hoping they will have a launch when we are there. That would be the ultimate highlight of DS's trip. We are going to spend a couple days at the coast, but if they are going to launch one of the days before we get there, we will probably dive over. We have an extra day at the end of our trip worked into our pass if we need it.

It is worth a trip over to Kennedy if you are interested in the space program. If they haven't launched you will be able to see the shuttle on the launch pad during the bus tour. They have several IMAX theaters with shows about the space program and they have a museum to tour. I have great pictures of the shuttle on the launch pad from our tour at KSC and then that night, they had the launch.
