Hi. We are heading to disney in a couple of weeks. I think my dd6 may be brave enough to ride Space Mountain, however if she needs to ride in a tram/car without dad or mom beside her, she will freak. I don't want to get her excited for the ride if it turns out that she would have to ride alone (with us in front or behind her vs. beside her) Thx.

Each vehicle is two cars together. Each car has three single seats one-behind-the-other, for a total of six riders per vehicle. She will apparently freak.

Rode it last year with my daughter who was 5 and did not know it was single file until we boarded. She did go ahead and ride it with me right behind her. But, yes, she did freak. And will probably never ride it again.

Thank you! We will be skipping Space Mountain with dd. Something to look forward to on a future trip. DH can ride it alone.

Although if you look at the seats, they are very close behind each other. you can lean forward in your seat and have your arms wrapped around her shoulders if she is in front of you. You could always go through the queue and have her look at the confirguration and she can take the chicken exit if she doesn't want to ride.

If you ever head to Disneyland, they are side by side.

Why not show her some youtube videos and still shots of the ride before you go? She may surprise you and be willing to brave it :-)

The first time my DS rode it, I rode it leaned forward with my hand on his shoulder. We went to ride it a second time and when I put my hand on his shoulder he yelled at me to quit :)

It is single seats, but very easy for the adult to sit in the seat behind and put hands on the child. My DH did this last year when our daughter rode Space Mountain for the first time, and she loved it (she had just turned 7 while on our vacation). She will be 8 and our youngest 6 before our trip next month, and today we showed our 6 year old videos on youtube of the rides and that really helped to ease her fears and get excited about it.

I remember riding it when I was young - back then you sat 2 to a seat one behind the other. I would always ride behind my dad - I was scared of the metal beams you could see so I hid behind him (figuring basically if one of us was going to get decapitated it would be him - yes, I love my dad but I love my head more!) Kind of a fun but weird memory.

DD age 13 refuses to ride Space Mountain because it's in the dark.

To the PP whose daughter freaked out and won't now ride SM: If it's any consolation, I rode Space Mountain for the first time when I was 6. According to my mother, it was my idea. I definitely don't remember that part. It was just me and my dad (mom had to watch my little brother, who wasn't yet tall enough). And the ride really freaked me out. I don't think I minded not sitting next to my dad. But I still remember vividly the impression that the train was going to fall off the tracks. Our next trip (when I was 9) I sat Space Mountain out (by that point, my brother was tall enough and *he* rode it with my dad). And the trip after that (about 12) I decided I was ready to try it again...and have loved it ever since. So, there's hope for kids who are at one point scared by some/all of Disney's coasters. Yes, not everyone will grow into a coaster fan. But just because a kid goes through a period where coasters are scary, doesn't mean that coasters will be scary to the kid forever.

Cannot even tell you how uncomfortable that would be. I merely had my hand on DS's shoulder and it hurt my body SO much.

My son told me to stop immediately after we rode. Oh man did that bug him, LOL. On our recent trip I managed to keep my hands to myself, but it was still horribly uncomfortable, so the kidlet can ride on his own next time!

But he was excited to ride single-file Space at WDW, and unenthused about the far more comfy side-by-side ride in Anaheim.

I have been contemplating taking my DD 5 year old on Space Mountain. she rides ToT, BTMRR, SM, and is moderatley afraid but capable of riding, and doesn't throw a fit. Maybe it's the overprotective mommy in me, but I have these terrifying images of her trying to get up or get to me while on the ride.... Maybe I'm just crazy, haha :rotfl:

I also just put my hand on my sons shoulder when he was 5 .. he liked it -- but wouldnt go on it again that trip -- but he did go on it every trip after.

I was expecting the straddle seat with him in front of me too --

This is actually a great right of passage. My middle child use to death grip us on rides...we took her on this and it was like taking away her pacifier.

When my kids were little, we had one parent ride in front, one in back, kid in the middle, and the parent in the back held onto the shoulders of the child in front of them just to give the kid a little reassurance. It was enough.
