Space Mountain Overlay Closure?

Hey All!

Since I just found out that Haunted Mansion will likely be closed on my upcoming trip to DLR, I was wondering if anyone has any historical info on when Space Mountain closed for Holiday overlays as well?

I am really looking forward to experiencing HyperSpace Mountain, but now I am concerned I won't be able to. I also know there is no announced end date for Season of the Force, which worries me as well.

Someone please reassure me HyperSpace Mountain will still be open on August 24th and 25th! :)

I'm a little confused about your "thanks, Shanghai" in this case. Haunted Mansion always closes sometime near the end of August for installation of the Halloween overlay, and Disneyland has never been real forthcoming about closure dates (six weeks out is about the best we get for many, especially routine, ride closure announcements). I wouldn't expect everyone to know this, and it's unfortunate you didn't come across this information before your booking, but the annual HM closure doesn't have anything to do with Disney budget cuts. The date for this year hasn't been officially announced. There is a rumor that Halloween time might begin Sept. 9 in which case, yes, it is likely that your dates will be no good for HM, but we don't actually know anything yet. That being said, there is no particular reason that Space Mountain would be closed for your dates. The switch to Ghost Galaxy was always very quick; I think the ride goes down for just a few days in September. Disney hasn't made any announcements about whether Ghost Galaxy is even coming this year or when the Star Wars stuff might end. Until they make an announcement, there's really no knowing, but there is no historical reason for any special concern with regard to Space Mountain and those dates, and the Star Wars stuff still seems very popular.

It was only meant to be a joke, it's used a lot on the podcasts for things that aren't budget cut related as well.

Thanks for the info!

The changeover to Ghost Galaxy (if they change it from Hyperspace Mnt) they do usually has been 4 days. So if Sept 9th is the date then I would expect it to go down on Mon Sept 5th. There is not much to it, so it does not take nearly as long as HM.

Glad to hear it is a much shorter timeframe.

The Halloween party website is listing Ghost Galexy as returning, the party being in Disneyland, and fireworks being offered for each party, wind dependent.

The overlays for Space Mountain are much less involved than the Haunted Mansion. They really only change some projections and the soundtrack. HM gets new animatronics installed and a ton of new decor. It takes a while. Personally, I was underwhelmed with Ghost Galaxy when I rode it a few years ago. I have not ridden Hyperspace yet.

I don't care for Ghost Galaxy either and hope they leave Hyperspace, which I love!

I will say I like the IDEA of Ghost Galaxy, it just doesn't come off very well. The projections of the ghost seemed to have a "frame" around them (i.e. they were too bright for the surrounding area). They should make improvements to Space Mountain's projection system anyway. The WDW version started looking a lot better after the major overhaul several years ago (where they blocked out tons of light bleed). I don't know if the DL version has undergone anything similar, but it doesn't seem like it to me.

Wow I really hope it's not the case that they switch over from Hyperspace mountain on Sept 5th because that's the first day of our trip and I purposely booked a trip to Disneyland to experience Hyperspace mountain...sigh.

I'm not sure if that page has been updated since last year, since nothing is announced this year yet.

Whatever enhancements were or would have been done last year, the overlay shutdown was extra-long because the Ghost galaxy installation became the same they use for Hyperspace Mountain.
