I have not been on Space Mountain in about 20 years and am now considering taking my DS5 on it. He is 44 inches and only about 40 pounds. He is very tiny for 5. Last year he was 40 pounds and 41 inches and went on Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Dinosaur etc and loved them all. He wasn't afraid at all.
But I recall Spcae Mountain as being a little more wild.
Can someone give me an opinion whether or not this would be an appropriate ride for him?
Thanks
Suzy

He'll be fine. They changed the seeting on Space now. It looks like this . Also. I was a very short skinny 4 year old when I rode it, so I think he'll be fine.

There is now way our skinny 5 year old (about the same size as yours) is riding Space Mountain yet. I just don't think that bar would hold her enough to make me happy. If she could ride in the same seat as me that would be different, but to ride alone......nope.

I just looked at the pic that Space Mountain posted (thanks :goodvibes ) and I am thinking the same. I don't think I would feel comfortable with him riding this ride without me being able to be beside him.

DD8 (75/80 lbs, 55 inches and CHUBBY) did last year with DH and I felt fine letting her do this.

Any more thoughts anyone?

I am contemplating letting DS5 ride this on our upcoming trip also. He is 45" and about 48 pounds. I am paranoid he will fall out!!! So I don't know if I should let him go or not....

My nephew was a skinny 5 year old and we couldn't get him off Space Mountain. I think he rode it 6 times.

i'll see your 40lb/44 inch 5 y/o and raise you a 37lb/44 inch 5 y/o :rotfl2:

37 lb DS is totallly looking forward to space mountain. our biggest issue is that our 4 y/o DD is only 41 inches and has major space mtn envy!

5 year old daughter was barely 44" and barely 40 lbs soaking wet. She loved it and went on it several times usually with both hands in the air. Believe it or not she never flew out of the rocket!!! Really, I wouldn't worry. If the kid meets the height requirement, he/she will be fine.

My 7yr old dd, 43 lbs and 49 inches will be once again going on Space Mtn! She went at 5yrs. and about 40 lbs (I can't exactly remember). The only thing to consider is how the seating works; she was a little anxious about not being able to sit "next to" someone. If your child knows in advance how the seating works and wants to try it, I say give it a whirl. Kids often surprise me at what they enjoy.

Have fun!

We leave in 10 days!!!!!!

I worried about him flying out too but if they meet the height requirement, it should be okay. I also worried about his head being jerked around so I put him in the seat in front of me and kind of kept his head steadied with my hands. Probably did nothing except give me a little piece of mind!! He will have a blast!!

Good Luck!

DD 8 and about 45 lbs went on it and loved it! She even rode it about 3 more times after!

Looking at the seat lay-out if my son was just 5 years old there is no way I would let him ride it - I would want to be sat next to him for safety.

My DD is 40lbs/45in. and I don't think I am going to let her ride this time. I'm still undecided though. I'm nervous because I can't hold onto her. I think it will come down to YOUR comfort level with the situation more than whether or not he is big enough. Do what you think is right. I also have a DS3 who is not tall enough so we kind of have an "out", saying since he can't go we are all skipping it.

Scubamouse, ditto, we have a DD 37 lb/ 44inches at 5 years. We couldn't get her off of it. She kept wanting to ride again and again and again. Her dad rode it with her the first time and I didn't realize how the seats were arranged. But she was fine.

How was the seating different before? No way my 5yo would ride this!

even if your child were sitting beside you in a seat, you really would not be able to hold onto him/her if he/she ejected. The same forces pulling them out are also working on you. That is why all riders must meet a height requirement. The rides are designed and tested to ensure that people of all sizes, shapes, etc. don't fall out. Falling out of a ride would be pretty bad for business!!

Seriously though, if your child is not afraid and meets the requirements, go for it.

The first trip (1991) we took our son was 4 1/2 and he was big for his age. The photos we had seen showed double seating and we didn't realize that it was single seating until we were almost ready to get on the ride. My wife sat behind him and held his shoulders and I sat in front of him in the first car and turned around held on to his legs. This was the first time I had ridden Space Mountain and did so from the front car looking backwards the whole time. It was quite a ride. I'm not sure it's a ride for your child quite yet..

And I thought I was the only one doing this....Despite the assurances from the CM's, I held onto my 5 yoa DS shoulders for the whole ride.

My daughter-in-law did not know that they had changed the seating and my six year old tall skinny granddaughter got off the ride crying - she was so scared. My daughter-in-law felt if it was a 2 seater she would have been OK. My granddaughter had been on other big rides including Dinosaur but had come off laughing. We feel it was because one of us were in the seat next to her.
