Does the whole party have to wait or can families go do other things while 1 person waits? The bloggers I read about had been there 4 hours waiting and their table still wasn’t ready. That will be hard with little kids.

I don't see why not, just shoot a text when you're close to the front.
Also, its only for this week that the restaurant is walk-up, reservations start next week.
