Spa vanity question for the ladies...

Great thread! It has got me thinking about the facials. After any facial I have had I was told to not put anything on my face for several hours. No makeup or sunscreen. So I wasn't going to get one. How does that work on the ship? I have to have sunscreen and I think everyone else would appreciate it if I had makeup on at least at dinner:lmao: Have I been lied to all these years???;)

Well, I think it kinda depends on how serious you are about it and WHY you want the facial.

If you just want the facial for the face massage, and how it feels, then it doesn't really matter. Yes, the oils and lotions that they put on your face are very beneficial to your skin, and you can enhance how well they work by leaving them on, but they'll still do your skin some good just for the few minutes that they ARE on, even if you wash your face and/or put sunscreen and/or makeup on shortly thereafter.

The last time I had a facial, in Myrtle Beach, what ever she put on my face last had sunscreen spf 20 in it. You may ask about whether they us spf or not.

I've had a facial at the Grand Floridian, and the products they use do not contain any chemicals, i.e. no sunscreen. I forget the exact term she used - it wasn't "organic" but it might have been "pure." I don't know if they contract with the same company, but the products they use may be similar.

This is fun reading! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Lollipop's Mom - love your story! Sounds like something I would do!!!

Anyone else have spa stories?

Some questions this thread made me think of:

Those of you who have had facials, I don't know much about them - can you describe what happens during one?

I have never had a full body massage because of my body image issues. Can someone describe what they do and how you keep covered, etc? I have had neck and back massages and I'm good with that, but don't know about legs, arms, and what else? Ha ha! Oh, and do they massage your scalp? My hairdresser does, but just for a minute or two. I would like about an hour of that alone, ha ha!

I don't know about you ladies, but when I leave a spa treatment, I feel sorta drunk! It's such a relaxed state and natural giddiness that I actually feel like I've have a few cocktails. So, the last think I can imagine doing is trying to put make up on or fixing my hair. I'd probably end up looking like a clown. So, I don't even bother going back to my room....it's straight to a lounge chair with all the other rough-looking cruisers!!

It all really just depends and every single massage and/or facial I've ever had has been different. So, as far as how well they cover you up, that depends too. It's usually fine to leave your underwear on (I have every time), but other than that, you are completely naked underneath the blanket. When they do your neck and back, they put the blanket just above your bum. Now I've only ever had a full body once, so I don't have a whole lot of experience with that, but when I did, she only did my lower legs and feet - stopped at the knee. On full body massages/neck and back massages, I have had some who would massage my scalp, and others who didn't. But if you said that that's something that you want, then I'm sure they will. ;)

As for facials, that REALLY all depends too as far as what oils/lotions they use. As people have said, sometimes they use lotions with SPF, others don't. So, I would ask your treatment specialist what they're using, how long you should go without putting anything else on, etc... And ask if it has an SPF in it. If it doesn't, and she says "don't put anything on your face for 4 hours" then I probably simply wouldn't listen, and would wash my face and do it anyways, but that's just me. It's not going to HURT you to do that - you just might not get ALL of the benefits to your skin that you would have otherwise, but that doesn't mean that you won't get ANY benefits! You will, definitely.

But given that this is on a CRUISE ship, and they understand that you WILL be out in the sun afterwards, they PROBABLY account for that with a sunscreen in their lotions, but you can't assume they do, so just ask. :)

Here is a funny 'vanity' story for you -
My daughter and I were in an inside room and it was so dark we slept until 11am - we woke up thinking 'oh no we are missing all the fun!' and rushed through showers, tossed on swimsuits and coverups and off we went (sea day). Left the room with wet hair - didn't matter to me if my hair was wet, people would think I was swimming.
We went and grabbed food, sat by the pool for a while and then my daughter found friends and went to the kids club.
I found a great spot by the adult pool, settled in with my book. I did feel like people kept looking at me. Now, I am not a 'tiny' person and was like 'yah im fat and in a bathing suit and getting sun - you don't like it, don't look at it' - but I was growing increasingly self conscious as people were really staring. I was thinking maybe I had a big booger on my face or something.
The wind was blowing and my hair blew in my face - so I smoothed it back and it felt all sticky and gross - REALLY gross.
I FORGOT TO RINSE THE CONDITIONER OUT OF MY HAIR!!!
I literally ran back to my room -which was deck 5 aft - so I had to go from the adult pool, all through the crowds on a sea day and into my room. I could only imagine that my hair looked like a massive greasey mess - I got into my stateroom and looked in the mirror - my hair had BIG chucks of white dried conditioner all through it - it looked like i had been slimed or something with white pudding!!!!!!
I sat out on that deck like that for nearly 45 mins - I wanted to die!!!!!!!!!!!!
I rinsed my hair and then went to secret aft deck 7 -I couldn't even go back to the adult pool that day!!!!!!

SO funny!!!!!:rotfl2:

Day pass for the rainforest room....where they have various saunas, steam rooms, showers .... and the infamous tile chairs. Very comfy and a great place to just relax!

Ginny
My very favorite place on the whole ship! I coulkd lie there for hours!

Sorry to hijack, but is it safe to say that any concerns I have about possibly not wearing any makeup until dinner time are for nothing?

I learned a long time ago that make up and hair are a waste of time durig the day on the ship. You are in the sun, the wind, on tours, getting sweaty, It;s not worth the trouble to out it all on or to do your hair. At night, yes, I like to shower and primp before dinner. I know if I am going to Palo to stay inside until I get there. I do not think I have ever scared anyone with my bare face and ponytail. And a ball cap!

I do recommend facial sun block, usually a higher SPF, because your face skin in thinner and more sensitive.

I had the full massage on DCL and remember it including head and foot massage as well as the rest.

When I was younger, no way would I have done anything requiring nudity, but age has it's benefits. However, you are not naked in front of the masseuse. Your torso will remain covered at all times - you will be more covered than the bathing suits you will see outside.

not only is nobody looking..... but nobody cares either!

In fact...I'll go one further....most people would probably notice people walking around looking GOOD more than they do people looking rumpled!! When most everyone on deck is looking rough from the sun, sweat, wind, lotions, etc., the last thing they'll usually want to see is someone looking all pretty and fresh. Save the make up and nice hair dos for dinner, is what I say!! :rotfl2:
