We have the same thing planned. We will go to DTD the day we get there to do some shopping and "window shopping" We are NOT going to spend hours shopping in the parks this year. On the last full day we are there I have it as a "favorites" day and we can go back to DTD if there is something they just HAVE to have
There are very few things which you can buy in the parks which you can't get at DTD such as the plush characters dressed in Sarafi gear. I have only ever seen them in AK.
I also want to get my DS a Baby Buzz (soft toy version) and I have only seen them in MGM.
If you are happy to carry the bags shop in both
I do both too but what I usually do is check things out in the parks and then head to DTD, towards the end of our trip, to buy our souvenirs because we get 10% discount with the AP and now with the Disney Visa.
But sometimes we do still buy one or two small things in the parks.
We usually do all our shopping at DTD. I collect Disney Snowglobes. Although they have a large selection at World of Disney at DTD, they don't carry the individual snowglobes for each park. On this years trip I will be picking those up when I exit each park.
I find that if you feel in your heart to buy, go ahead because you never know if your going to get the chance to do it. I'm not saying go crazy (you still have to eat or do some activity). Since I'm an Annual Pass Holder (AP), I get a 10% discount at "The World of Disney" (WOD). So what I find myself doing alot of is asking if the same item is at the WOD. If yes, I wait towards the end of my trip. If not, I think about it (for about 2 seconds), then buy it. I will say that the merchandise from all the rides are only sold at that particular park. So, it all depends. You be the judge.
Can't you only buy a Tshirt that says "Magic Kingdom" "Epcot" etc in those parks not at the DTD the ones at the downtown disney store only says Walt Disney World on them.
Same with some of the Tshirts and stuff from the resorts.
In other words don't think I'd spend all my money at one time in one place.
I have on the other hand found clearance items at the disney store downtown and not in the parks and visa versa.
Got Disney World tshirts with Mickey on them for 5.00 one trip
Another trip got a Beauty and the Beast Music Box for like 8.00
Both of those was at the store downtown disney
Then other times we have found stuff on clearance in the shops in the parks
Fanny packs in 2000 I think it was bought one for each one of us they was less than 5.00 we still use them at disney and other times we need to be hands free.
On our last trip we held off buying our souveniors for DTD only to be disappointed that certain selected merchandise is only sold in the park. These items seemed to be related to specific ride merchandise. ie. picture frames from TOT.
I learned this lesson on my last trip...if you know you absolutely want a certain item, buy it when you see it because you may not see it again for the rest of your trip.

Yeah basically what she said. If you see something that you really like, I suggest you buy right when you see it. The last time I went to Disney, I found something that I liked but didn't have time to buy it since I was with my band. At the end of the day, I realized that I really wanted it and we went around the whole park looking for it but couldn't find it. :|
we do both as well...but the best part of buying at DTD is that if you're a DVC member, you get a discount...even if its just like 10% off a pen or something
But deff. if you see something you want don't hesitate to buy it

Ditto and Ditto!! I'm still angry at myself for letting the Maleficent doll go. They had already retired them but they had one left in the Villiains store at MGM. I debated and debated over it, but, in the end, I decided that surely they would have a ton of them at DTD and since we only had a couple of hours left before it was time to go home and there were a few items at WOD I needed to get, I'd just wait. MISTAKE!!! I cussed under my breath all the way to the airport and probably off and on for several months afterwards.
Moral of this rambling you ask? If you see it, you like it, buy it!! You may have to pay twice as much on Ebay a couple of years later for the same item!!
Just back from WDW and my husband and I both agree that The World of Disney store in DTD was the best place by far for souvenirs, especially ones to take back home for family & friends. Of course, like others have said, if there is a must-have then by all means buy it when you see it. But the huge selection at the World of Disney store was incredible! One-stop shopping for all our family and friends back home. We also got things there for ourselves there that we were not able to find anywhere else. We shopped there on our second to last day and are very happy that we waited until then to get the gifts for family & friends.
