Truthfully, flying out of the Northeast during Feb School Vacation week is brutal. It will be busy, it will be expensive. Decide what price you can live with, and jump on tickets as soon as you see it.
What we've done in the past, is try to either get out of town a day or two before vacation, or come back a day or two late.
DS is now a Jr in High School, but when he was in elementary & middle school we would typically fly out Tuesday or Weds night before vacation (we usually had a half day the Thurs before vacation, and the day off on Friday, so he'd only miss a day or two. Then we'd fly back on Thurs or Friday of vacation week.
The only other advice is to book as SOON as the flights open up, because they will only get higher
One year (2013) we actually drove down because the prices were ridiculous and not affordable - but we had the advantage of four drivers in the car so we drove straight through.
The year before (2012) we drove 6 hours to Pennsylvania (Allentown) and took an AirTran flight from there because PA didn't have spring break that same week.
