Southwest Seat Assignments?

It's been a LONG time since I've flown SWA... how do they handle the seat assignments? Is it still, first person checked in at gate gets boarding pass #1? Also, do they preboard for young children and the elderly? Okay, so my child is now 6, but having to deal with her and my mother (who isn't exactly elderly - 60, but has serious back problems)... it would be SO much better if I didn't have to wait to board...

I just flew SWA yesterday. At baggage check-in you get your boarding pass (no longer another line at the gate podium) with a boarding group of A, B, or C. It's still open seating with the A's board first and so on. There's still preboards for those who need extra time or assistance. They're extremely helpful so ask about the preboard at the gate.

Be aware that with you mom, only your mom will be allowed to preboard, not you and your child also.

Dollar is down one flight/floor from baggage pickup.

a lot depends on the gate agents.... ( just an observation )

the rules may be there....but they are often "bent" by both sides....

Very true, indeed. But, forewarned is forearmed. And, by offering the worst case scenario, you can only be pleasantly surprised.

So, even though she'll need assistance, I'm not able to assist her? Am I going to be disappointed flying Southwest? I haven't flown anything but Delta in years, and while their whole reservations process can be a bear, once I get to the airport, they can be very accomodating.

Just let them know she will need your assistance and they will accomodate you.
No, you will not be disappointed, they are great.

Since, I gather from your posts, she has a bad back, you might want to consider a wheelchair for Disney also. Lots of standing and waiting in line there. This might be a good option for MCO also, as it is a long walk from the gates to baggage.

I flew SW just a few months ago, and I saw plenty of folks in the "preboard" line that did not look to need assistance. I was traveling with DD so we were in Preboard.

My guess, with a DM who needs assistance, and a child (even at 6) I think they will allow you all to preboard.

It was my first time with SW. I am an USAir frequent flyer thanks to work, but this deal was a good one. I was not disappointed, but it was totally a different experience. The staff (young) was very laid back and cut up over the speaker. Not bad, just different. Counter service and inflight was very nice. Its just a different airline. I had flown ValueJet way back when, and this was a much better experience for a discount airline.

You'll be fine! Have a wonderful time. I have heard great things about Dollar at MCO.

Yes, we have discovered the WONDERS of the ECV's at WDW. Now she's able to go all day with us, rather than having to head back to the hotel after an hour or so... but watch out! She's not the best "steerer"!
