Southwest is giving 50,000 points again

I would call Southwest and ask how soon the 50K would get deposited. 3 months would be cutting it awfully close. Ideally you want to book those flights now. My husband and I got the other offer of just 1 purchase (4 months ago) and his card got points added 1 month after getting the card, mine took almost 3 billing cycles. So if you have to wait for 3 months, and then wait at least another billing cycle to get the points, that will be too late.

It may be that you won't be able to use the points for this coming trip, but the points don't expire (I've been lead to believe) as long as you follow a few rules. So you could use the points for another trip. Or, do what we are doing, use your points to buy gift cards for national chain restaurants (like Olive Garden) and use them for your trip. It is going to save us a TON on food costs.

Good luck

yes I think that is a good idea to call and ask...I got my card when you just had to make the one purchase too, I am asking now for DS...I guess we could use our points for him and his family and then if he get this card and the points don't come in time(which I am doubting now from your comments) he could buy our next tickets right?
I had been watching for the 50,000 points deal since March from him and have not seen it and then this AM while checking for flights I saw this one with the 1000 purchase in 3 months which it the thing that bothered me.. Well I guess he could fly another airline too since the SW fares from CLE are not that great anyway(that is why we initially wanted to looking into the 50000 deal).
Thanks for all your help. :goodvibes

So glad I saw this! I have been waiting for the 50,000 bonus to pop back up, but just 5 days ago, decided it probably wasn't going to happen and therefore applied for the card with only 25,000 points. I just called SW and asked if they could instead honor this new promo, and they did!! I love the DIS!

Yea, we have the card.....and the points. Just have to figure out the best way to maximize our points when we cash them in. Since they don't expire we figured we'd sit on them for a while :)

THis might have been mentioned but I was in a timecrunch when I got my cards 2 years ago. So when the card arrived say on the 6th of the month it showed a close date of say the 31st. I did not want to wait this long for the cycle to end, then post the points, etc. So I made an immediate charge, called chase and asked for them to have my due date the 10th instead of the 31st. That way that closed that cycle for the month earlier and points posted quickly. make sense?

We are looking into applying for this card. Do we just apply and once we get accepted they automatically add the 50,000 points? or is there something else that we have to do?

As mentioned, the current offer is that you have to spend $1000 on the card (w/in 3 months) to get the points....so you won't get them just by getting approved.

Same thing here! I applied and approved instantly last week and saw the new promo.

Just got off the phone w/Chase and they easily swapped the promos for me! :)

So, with this new promo, if I spend a $1000 immediately and pay it off, will my points post within the first month or do I have to wait for 3 months?

My DD just got off the phone with Chase. She was approved for the 25,000 this weekend and had no problem swapping to the 50,000 promo. She did ask if she would have to wait 3 months for the miles and after a brief hold was told the 50,000 would be credited after the $1,000 billed (you do not have to wait the full 3 months! :thumbsup2)

In case anyone was wondering.... I used some of our points to get a gift card for Olive Garden (10K pts = $100 card) It came in the mail in about 1 week. It looks like a regular gift card and no specific exclusions listed on the back (just the usual stuff).

We don't like to fly Southwest, so we plan on using our points for gift cards for our Oct. trip. I wanted to do a test to see how long it would take to get the card and if it was a "special" card with different rules than the regular cards. Appears not. So I am going to order more cards.

Anyone know how much it dings your credit score to open the credit cards and then close them again before the annual fee ?

Unless things have changed since I worked in banking (all together possible LOL), your credit score is a combination of how long you hold your credit cards as well as your good paying history. Your credit score may drop a small amount if you only hold the card a year but if you have spotless credit, it will NOT hurt you at all!

Also, when I received my SW card last year, they charged the annual fee the first month I had the card.

So- if I get this card and spend the 1000$ within the first 3 months, then get 50,000 points, how do those points convert into flights? Do you look at the "buying with points option" on southwest online or do you have to call and do something special like with blackout dates? I guess I am trying to figure out how hard the process will be to get a flight I want. Also- can you use the points to buy other people flights or just your self?
Thanks for any feedback!

yes - that is the current offer

yes

yes, you can buy flights for others as well

Also- when do points expire?

If you go 2 years without any activity I believe they expire. If you earn points, then the 2 years start over.

My DH's annual fee for this card was around $70 last Dec. I just applied for the card. Does anyone know if the fee has changed?

If it's the same offer I got, it's $69 for the regular card which gives you 3,000 points (worth $50) on each anniversary. It's $99 for the premier which gives you 6,000 points (worth $100) one each anniversary.

The only difference I see is that now you have to spend $1,000 in the first 3 months before they give you the 50,000 points.
